    • A light assembly includes a metal halide light source having an arc tube with first and second legs extending from a discharge chamber. A light transmissive capsule surrounds the light source. A reflector is received in the capsule and has a large diameter, annular first portion that receives light from the discharge chamber and is dimensioned to operatively engage an inner surface of the capsule to mount the reflector assembly and light source relative to the capsule. In addition, a small diameter portion of the reflector assembly is received around the first leg. By electrically interconnecting the reflector with the second electrode assembly, namely the support leg, and positioning the small diameter portion closer to the first electrode assembly than the dimension between the electrode terminal ends allows the reflector to also serve as an ignition aid. The reflector is formed of a material that serves as a heat shield for the seal glass in the first leg and also serves as a heat shield for the capsule seal region.

    • Arc chambers for discharge lamps, such as ceramic metal halide lamps, have ends, where the electrodes for the arc chambers are introduced, that are configured such that, when the arc chambers are arranged vertically, the metal halide additives in the arc chambers will accumulate substantially only on the inner surfaces of the ends, which can have closure walls that are thicker than the thickness of the walls of the body portions of the arc chambers. The ends can be further configured such that the metal halides are deposited substantially uniformly in a thin layer over the ends of the arc chambers. The ends can also be configured in a manner that no sharp edges are provided at the ends of the arc chambers so that corrosive effects to the arc chamber resulting from localized temperature variations are minimized.

    • A low watt ceramic metal halide lamp has a body with a discharge chamber disposed therein. First and second hollow legs extend from the discharge chamber and received first and second electrode assemblies, respectively, therethrough with first ends of the electrode assemblies disposed in spaced relation in the discharge chamber. Use of thin legs limits heat flux from the discharge chamber. Preferably, thin legs are defined by a load dissipation factor of the ceramic part being less than 0.065 mm2/watt. In addition, thermal conductance along the leg is controlled via a load dissipation factor of the molybdenum mandrel portion of the electrode assembly being maintained less than 0.0008 mm2/watt.
