    • A nail having a plurality of grooves configured to reduce the amount of material needed to create the nail and increase the holding power of the nail, while only minimally affecting the bending yield strength of the nail and other important properties. The nail includes a relatively high number of grooves having a relatively shallow depth to retain a cross-sectional geometry of the shank that permits the formation of a full round head of sufficiently large diameter such that pull through resistance of the nail is not significantly affected. Various embodiments of such a nail are disclosed. In a first embodiment, the grooves are semi-circular and are disposed evenly and symmetrically about the circumference of the shank. In a second embodiment, a protrusion is formed at one tangent point (corner) of each of the plurality of grooves. In a third embodiment, a protrusion is formed at each tangent point of each of the plurality of grooves. In other embodiments the grooves may be unevenly and asymmetrically disposed about the circumference of the shank, the grooves may comprise non-semi-circular geometries and the grooves may comprise deformations.

    • A building assembly comprises a wooden board, a metal framing member, and a fastener having an elongate shank, an enlarged head, and a generally pointed end and fastening the board to the framing member. The shank has a ringed portion with annular grooves defining annular rings having a uniform, outer diameter, helical grooves intersecting the annular grooves, a cylindrical land having a smaller diameter and dividing the ringed portion into an axially longer subportion nearer to the tip and an axially shorter subportion nearer the head, a cylindrical land between the tip and the ringed portion, and a cylindrical land between the head and the ringed portion. The fastener is driven through the board and through the framing member wall so that the head bears against the board, so that the tip and the shank form, from the wall of the framing member, a generally annular lip projecting toward the tip and so that the lip is disposed around the cylindrical land dividing the ringed portion. The wall of the framing member has sufficient resiliency for the lip when disposed around the cylindrical land to have an inner diameter smaller than the outer diameter of the annular ring nearest to the cylindrical land among the annular rings of the subportion nearer to the tip. Each helical groove taken in cross-section is either symmetrical or asymmetrical with respect to a plane comprising the axis defined by the shank and intersecting said helical groove where such helical groove is deepest.

    • A fastener is configured for securing a lath to a surface for, for example, the application of stucco to the surface. The fastener includes a fastener having a head, a shank and a penetrating tip. The head has a diameter and the shank has a diameter less than the head diameter. The stucco fastener has a sealing/spacer assembly having spacer element and a sealing element. The spacer element is formed from a relatively incompressible material and has a diameter greater than the shank diameter. The spacer element has a bore therein having a diameter about equal to the shank diameter. The sealing element is formed from a resilient, water-resistant material and is positioned adjacent to and in contact with the spacer element. When the fastener is driven into the surface, the fastener penetrates the surface to secure the fastener to the surface and a portion of the lath is captured between the head of the fastener and the spacer element to space the lath from the surface. The sealing element contacts the surface to form a seal at the fastener penetration to prevent the incursion of liquid into the surface around the fastener penetration, and the sealing element, as least in part, conforms to the surface between the surface and the spacer element.
