    • An apparatus for generating a data processing pathway in a hardware-ready format is provided which includes a computer-based client and an output device. The client has processing circuitry, memory, a raster formatter, and a software-based data compression apparatus configured to render a rasterized, bitmapped image into image data in a hardware-ready format. The output device communicates with the client and has hardware-ready program code and a hardware-assisted print device. The hardware-assisted print device includes a printer controller, with the printer controller including processing circuitry, memory, and a data decompressor. The hardware-ready program code is operative via the printer controller to receive the hardware-ready image data from the client and render output containing the image to the hardware-assisted print device. A method is also provided.

    • Apparatus and method for compressing Huffman encoded data. The compression apparatus includes a string detector and a record generator. The compression apparatus operates to receive the Huffman encoded data and the length of the codewords used to generate the Huffman encoded data. The string detector then operates to detect each set of repeating strings and each non-repeating string in the encoded data. Each set of repeating strings is replaced with a record that indicates the length of the repeating string, the number of repeats and an instantiation of the repeating string. In addition, each non-repeating string is replaced with a record that indicates the length of the non-repeating string and the non-repeating string. The resulting compressed Huffman data can then be transmitted to a printer.

    • A compression apparatus for compressing a digital image is disclosed and includes a decomposer, a transform encoder unit and a merge plane compressor. The digital image is converted by the compression apparatus into a set of tiles suitable for transform encoding. Each tile from the set is then compressed by converting the tile into a “merge plane data string” and an associated “transform encoded data string”. The merge plane data string describes only the spatial locations of the background pixels in the tile. The transform encoded data describes the tile in the frequency domain but without the spatial frequencies associated with the background pixels. One important use of the present invention is to compress digital images prior to transmitting the digital image to a printer for printing.

    • Various systems, methods, and programs embodied in computer readable mediums are provided for compression of a page frame that includes a number of pixels. In one embodiment, an object map is generated that includes a number of values, each of the values being associated with a corresponding one of the pixels in the page frame. Also, a compressed image file is generated of the page frame that is associated with the object map. Each of the values in the object map indicates whether a blank color conversion or one of a number of predefined color conversions is to be performed during a reconstruction of a corresponding one of the pixels, wherein each of the predefined color conversions includes a corresponding degree of gray component replacement.

    • The present invention is a method and system for mixed resolution, multi-channel color image processing including compression, transmission and decompression. The color information is defined at a lower resolution since colors generally do not change at a high frequency and higher compression ratios may be obtained with the lower resolution. The edge information contains the commands switch between the foreground and background colors. The edge information occurs at high resolution and high frequency rates relative to the color information. The lower resolution color planes can be pixel replicated to the resolution of the edge information after compression and decompression for proper edge selection to occur. The resulting reconstructed image of foreground and background colors retains high detail.
