    • The preparation, structure, and properties of solid inorganic materials containing aluminum, boron, oxygen and at least one Group VIII metallo element, selected from the group consisting of cobalt and nickel is described. Also described is the use of such materials in catalytic compositions for the conversion of organic compounds. In particular, the new materials having the general formula:(x)(M.sub.m :M'.sub.n)O.(y)Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.(z)B.sub.2 O.sub.3where M and M' are metallo elements selected from the group consisting of nickel and cobalt, m and n are numbers form 0 to 1, inclusive, such that m+n=1, and x, y and z are numbers representing molar amounts of the oxides are described as well as the use of such materials in various catalyzed processes including hydrogenation of hydrocarbons and oxygen containing hydrocarbons, dehydrogenation to functionalize alkylaromatic compounds, isomerization of alkylaromatic compounds, oligomerization of olefins, and oxidation of hydrocarbons and oxygen containing hydrocarbons.

    • There is provided a process for the preparation of an overbased sulfurized alkaline earth metal alkylphenate product which provides improved bright stock solubility and reduced foam stability, the overbased alkylphenate products produced thereby, and lubricating oil compositions containing such overbased alkylphenate products. According to the process, a mixture of an alkylphenol having an alkyl group containing from about 8 to about 40 carbon atoms, elemental sulfur, a dihydric alcohol containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, an alkaline earth metal compound, a lubricating oil, and a high boiling point linear monohydric alcohol having from about 18 to about 60 carbon atoms is heated to a first temperature within the range of about 121.degree. C. (250.degree. F.) to about 204.degree. C. (400.degree. F.); the resulting intermediate product mixture is contacted with carbon dioxide at a second temperature below 193.degree. C. (380.degree. F.) to provide a carbonated product mixture; the carbonated product mixture is treated to remove unreacted alkylphenol, unreacted dihydric alcohol, and substantially all of the remaining water of reaction to provide a final product mixture; and the final product mixture comprising said overbased alkylphenate and substantially all of the high boiling point linear monohydric alcohol is recovered.

    • The preparation, structure, and properties of solid inorganic materials containing at least one transition element, aluminum, boron and oxygen are described. Also described is the use of such materials in catalytic compositions for the conversion of organic compounds. In particular, new materials comprising(a) crystalline LnAl.sub.1.67+0.67X (B.sub.4 O.sub.10)O.sub.X, and(b) crystalline LnAl.sub.2.67+0.33Z (B.sub.4 O.sub.11)O.sub.Zwhere Ln is at least one transition element, X is a number ranging from 0 to 1, and Z is a number ranging from 0 to 2, each crystalline phase having a characteristic X-ray diffraction pattern are described as well as the use of such materials in various catalyzed processes including oxidative dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons and oxygen-containing hydrocarbons, dehydrogenation to functionalize alkylaromatic compounds, and ammoxidation of alkylaromatic compounds. Also, these new crystalline rare earth aluminum borates exhibit a variety of physical properties that make their use as optical materials attractive, including uses for optical frequency conversion, fluorescence, and laser materials.
