    • The invention includes a method and apparatus for controlling information available at a network element located at a first hierarchical level in a content distribution network. A method includes determining a subset of content using content forecast information, comparing the determined subset of content to a subset of content available to the network element located at the first hierarchical level, generating a request adapted for modifying the available subset of content in response to a difference between the determined and available subsets of content, and propagating the request toward a network element at a second hierarchical level in the content distribution network, where the first and second hierarchical levels are different. The content may include any information adapted for being distributed from a server to a subscriber terminal (e.g., broadcast multimedia content, content-on-demand, non-streaming content such as files and software patches, and the like, as well as various combinations thereof).

    • In order to provide a network element for switching time-division multiplex signals in a transport network, which allows higher capacity at moderate equipment costs, the network element has a number of input ports (I; IO1 - IO8), a number of output ports (O; IO1 - IO8) and a switch fabric ()SF; 58) interconnecting the input and output ports (IO1 - IO8). The switching fabric ()SF; 58) is a cell based switch comprising one or more switch modules ()SE1 - SEn) which are adapted to switch fixed-length cells on the basis of addresses contained in cell headers of the cells. The input ports (I) contain a segmentation device (11) for segmenting an input time-division multiplex signal into fixed-length cells and assigning address information to each cell. The output ports (O) contain a reassembly device (14) for reassembling cells received from said switch fabric (SF; 58) into an output time-division multiplex signal. The address information contains a fabric address (H1, H2) and a TDM address (P0, P1). The switch fabric switches the cells in accordance with the fabric address (H1, H2) to a corresponding output port (O) and the reassembly device (14) reassembles the cells in accordance with the TDM address (P0, P1).

    • The invention concerns a method of performing an intra-segment handover (HO) of a mobile station (MS) from a source access point (AP1) of a tree- structured segment (S1) of an Ethernet-compliant telecommunication network to a target access point (AP2) of said segment (S1), as well as a switch (SW-123) to support the execution of this method. After establishing contact between the mobile station (MS) and the target access point (AP2), the mobile station (MS) sends an update entry request addressed to the segment gateway switch (GW). The update entry request is received by a switch (SW-123) positioned in the tree structure of the segment (S1) hierarchically above the source and target access points (AP1, AP2) and below the segment gateway switch (GW). The switch (SW-123) checks whether its forwarding database contains a first entry comprising an address of the mobile station (MS) received by means of the update entry request. If the forwarding database of the switch (SW-123) contains the first entry, the switch (SW-123) squelches said update entry request and assumes the function of an anchor switch regarding the handover (HO), whereby the anchor switch is a switch of the segment (S1) which is positioned in the tree structure of the segment (S1) hierarchically above the source and target access points (AP1, AP2) and below the segment gateway switch (GW) and which is common to the ongoing session before and after the handover (HO).
