A calculating device comprises a counting device of the movable-bead or abacus type, and a display device incorporating a plurality of series of numerals on movable components, and movable screen members allowing selection for viewing of some, as desired, of the numerals. The preferred embodiment, suitable for educational purposes, comprises a shallow box-like tray calculator 1 to which is hinged a shallow display frame 2. A plurality of rods 4 carry beads 5 on both sides of partition 3. Pointers 7 move in slots 6 on the upper and/or lower transverse walls of the tray 1. The space of the display frame 2 is formed with a series of parallel channels 12, Fig. 3, parallel to the side walls 9 and extending beneath the outer transverse wall 10, each to receive a stack of strips 13, displaying columns of numbers. Guide grooves in the side walls 9 hold a transparent sheet cover 14 for the channels 12 and eight opaque strips 15 slidable in the grooves over the glass sheet 14 so that one or other of the nine transverse rows of numerals on the strips 13 can be seen. The 11 strips a-l (Fig. 5, not shown) which are stacked in each channel 12 each carry a column of numerals. Ten strips indentified respectively by numerals 0-9 at their head carry numerals representing the results of multiplying the head number by the numbers 1-9. The remaining strip carries the squares of numbers 1-9. The order of strips in each stack 13 may be varied, and strips may be partially withdrawn from channel 12 so as to vary the numeral of that strip displayed in the gap not covered by a shutter 15. A pointer 17 may be moved along the edge of the lower wall 8.
