    • 1340633 Production of polymethylbenzenes LABOFINA SA 7 Jan 1972 [13 July 1971 (3)] 817/72 Heading C5E Polymethylbenzenes are produced from alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons having the formula wherein R 1 is a C 2-6 alkyl radical, R 2 is a C 1-3 alkyl radical and R 3 is a methyl radical, n is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and m is 0 or 1 by (a) hydrogenating the alkylaromatic hydrocarbon to the corresponding alkylcyclohexane, (b) isomerizing the alkylcyclohexane in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to provide polymethylcyclohexanes, and (c) subjecting the polymethylcyclohexanes to a combined dehydrogenation-isomerization step to produce polymethylbenzenes. The hydrogenation (a) can be carried out at 150-350‹ C. and 20-70 kg/cm 2 with a recycle ratio between 1 and 50 using a catalyst comprising 5-60 wt. per cent of Ni, or 0À1-1À5 wt. per cent of Pt, Pd, Ru, Os, Rh or an alloy of Pt with Re, on a support such as silica, silica-alumina, alumina or zeolite. The isomerization (b) can be carried out below 150‹ C. using 1-60 wt. per cent (based on the feed) of AlCl 3 , BF 3 , SnCl 4 , SbCl 3 , ZnCl 2 , GaCl 3 , AlBr 3 , FeCl 3 , BaBr 3 or a mixture of AlCl 3 and SbCl 3 . A promoter such as HCl, alkyl halide or olefin can be used. The dehydrogenation-isomerization (c) can be carried out at 200- 600‹ C. and up to 50 kg/cm 2 using a catalyst comprising 0À1-5 wt. per cent of a Pt group metal, or of an alloy of Pt with Re on a carrier such as, silica, alumina, silica-alumina or zeolite; the polyalkylcyclohexane feed can be diluted with aromatic compounds, e.g. alkylbenzenes. A diethylbenzene feed 10 is mixed with a recycle stream 16 and a hydrogen stream 13 and hydrogenated at 12; the diethylcyclohexane product 14 is in part recycled and in part sent together with a stream 19 of anhydrous HCl, to an isomerization zone 18 containing AlCl 3 at 30‹ C. The isomerized product 20 is stripped at 21 and then distilled at 24 to provide a distillate 26 boiling from 150-165‹ C. and a bottoms 25 which is recycled. The distillate 26 is passed to the dehydrogenation-isomerization 27 and the product 29 is passed to a fractionation column 30 from which material boiling below 192‹ C. is recycled and the bottom fraction passed to a crystallization zone 33 from which a durene product is crystallized and the mother liquor recycled to the zone 27.
