    • A coding method and a coding apparatus for bi-level document image which makes a high speed coding processing possible is provided. In the coding apparatus, an image reading processing section provides an image data reading means which reads bi-level image data from a RAM, a CX generating means which generates CX using image data in a line memory and a CX counting means which counts the number of appearance times of CX based on the CX generated by the CX generating means and the inputted bi-level image data. In the coding apparatus, a coding processing section provides a coding processing deciding means which decides to implement either of two kinds of coding processing, a normal coding means which implements a normal coding processing implementing a conventional JBIG algorithm and a high speed coding means which implements a high speed coding processing using the counted values. With this, at the case of the image having a large amount of white areas such as a bi-level document image, the efficiency of the coding processing is improved and as a result the high speed coding processing can be realized.

    • In a projection means black pixel histograms of a binary stationary image are generated in both the vertical and the horizontal direction. In a text type judgment means, in accordance with these histograms, a determination is made of whether the image is vertical text or horizontal text. Based on the result of this determination, a pattern block extraction means extracts either a column or a row from the image. The block is further projected and divided into smaller blocks. Then projection is again applied to these divided blocks and patterns are extracted by a pattern extraction means. A judgment is made as to whether or not joining of the extracted patterns is to be performed and, if joining is required, they are joined by a pattern joining means and finally the offsets of all the extracted patterns are calculated, whereupon data (of extracted patterns) are sent to a pattern matching process.

The codes in pattern matching encoding are reduced, and the efficiency of code transmission and code accumulation is improved.

    • Pattern encoding is carried out by 1) substituting an index data of a registered pattern for a position data in a library with respect to an index data peculiar to each of the extracted patterns, 2) taking a difference between an off-set position data of the extracted pattern and an off-set position data of the registered pattern whereby an off-set position difference data is provided, and 3) encoding the position data and the off-set position difference data and providing an encoded data. A pattern extracting unit obtains the extracted patterns from image data. An accumulating/checking unit accumulates the extracted patterns as accumulated patterns, assigns indexes specific to the accumulated patterns, and checks each extracted pattern by comparison with the accumulated patterns. When an accumulated pattern is found to match the extracted pattern, the accumulating/checking unit provides a position data within a library instead of the index data, and also provides the off-set position difference data. When no pattern is found to match the accumulated pattern libraries, the accumulating/checking unit provides the off-set position data and bit map data of the extracted pattern to the encoding unit. The arrangement enables the reduction in codes in pattern encoding, thus improving the code transmission efficiency.

    • An improved technique for pre-processing a picture image data signal wherein a black/white image data and a halftone image data coexists, is disclosed. The pre-processing is implemented before run-length encoding. Each of line image data signals is divided into n data blocks (n is a positive integer). A reset signal is produced in synchronism with each of the data blocks when divided. Following this, a selector is supplied with a first line image data signals directly applied and also receives the first line image data via a convolution circuit to said selector. The number of transition points in each of the data blocks is counted with respect to the first line image data signal which is directly applied to said selector. Similarly, the number of transition points in each of the blocks is carried out with the first line image data signal which is applied to said selector via said convolution circuit. The comparison results of n blocks of the first line image data are stored and then applied to the selector which chooses one of the data blocks of a second line image data signal applied thereto according to the comparison results. The second line image data signal is preceded by said first line image data signal.

    • An arithmetic datastream representative of an original sequence of input bi-level symbols is transmitted, before an information code carrying information on a total length of the input symbols, from a coding subsystem to a decoding subsystem. A register shifts out respective transmitted portions of the datastream to an arithmetic decoder, where they are decoded into a symbol sequence starting with the same sequence as the original sequence. The decoded symbol sequence is output through an output circuit which counts symbols in that sequence. The register holds a final portion of the datastream. The information code is decoded by an information decoder, which informs the output circuit of decoded information, before flushing the register to input the final portion of the datastream to the arithmetic decoder. The output symbol sequence becomes equal in symbol number to the original sequence, when the output circuit stops outputting.

    • A bi-level image coder for providing reduced bit rate arithmetic codes is disclosed, wherein each page of image to be coded is divided into a plurality of areas such as line groups, or blocks, and an arithmetic coder codes each of input pixels (the pixel S.sub.i) by using a predicted value of MPS (most probable symbol) and a predicted probability of LPS (least probable symbol) occurrence which are generated with a template and a LPS predicted probability table. The pixel attribute of the pixel S.sub.i is determined to one of a character image attribute, a dither/dot image attribute and a halftoned image attribute based on statistical properties of the area of the pixel S.sub.i. One of predetermined LPS predicted probability tables and one of predetermined templates are selected for each of the areas in operation. The coder may be so arranged as to following the JBIG standard. In one embodiment, a specific pixel of the template used for context data generation is moved to a position highly correlated with the pixel to be coded.
