    • In a reflection-type image projecting unit, being applicable into a reflection-type image display apparatus, being superior in contrast and achieving small-sizing of the apparatus, together with a light source for use therein, a light flux including three (3) color components, R, G and B, emitted from a light source portion 100, are modulated and synthesized by means of reflection-type liquid crystal panels 221, 222 and 223 in an optical engine 200, which is constructed with three (3) prism-like polarization light beam splitters, to be emitted thereform, wherein those three (3) prism-like polarization light beam splitters are so displosed, that the G-component light of the three component lights R, G and B modulated on the reflection-type liquid crystal panel elements penetrates through two (2) of the prism-like polarization light beam splittrers 231 and 232, to be emitted therefrom, while the others, the B-component light and the R-component light penetrate therethrough after being reflected thereupon, or they are reflected after penetrating therethrough, while taking the planes of polarization lights of the propagating lights into the consideration.

    • An optical unit, comprising: a light source; a color separation means for separating a light emitted from the light source into plural pieces of color lights; reflection-type image display elements, upon each being incident the corresponding color of the lights from the color separation means, and for forming an optical image for each of the color lights, depending upon an image signal, with using polarization characteristics which the reflection-type image display elements have; and a color synthesizing means for synthesizing the optical images of the respective color lights, to be projected through a projection lens, enlargedly, and further comprising: a reflection-type polarization plate functioning as a polarization plate due to diffraction, being provided on an optical path extending from the color separation means to the reflection-type image display elements, to be a polarizer and an analyzer to the reflection-type image display elements; and an optical chassis for holding the reflection-type polarization plate and the reflection-type image display elements thereon, and having a translucent window on an incident light side of the reflection-type polarization plate while an exiting light side of the reflection-type polarization plate is sealed with an incident surface of the color synthesizing means, wherein a hermetically sealed space is defined by the optical chassis, the reflection-type image display elements and the incident surface of the color synthesizing means, and within the hermetically sealed space is disposed a translucent liquid having refraction index from 1.2 to 1.9.

    • An optical unit includes a light source, a color separator, reflection-type image display elements, a color synthesizer, a reflection-type polarization plate, and an optical chassis. The optical chassis holds the reflection-type polarization plate and the reflection-type image display elements thereon, and has a translucent window on an incident light side of the reflection-type polarization plate while an exiting light side of the reflection-type polarization plate is sealed with an incident surface of the color synthesizer. A hermetically sealed space is defined by the optical chassis, the reflection-type image display elements and the incident surface of the color synthesizer, and within the hermetically sealed space is disposed a translucent liquid having a refraction index from 1.2 to 1.9.

    • Disclosed is a polarized-light converting unit, which is excellent in contrast performance and realizes high reliability and an increase in its life, and a projector device using the converting unit. The polarized-light converting unit includes first and second polarizing beam splitters provided in an integral form. The first polarizing beam splitter includes two incident planes on which two types of color light are respectively incident.
