    • An image reading apparatus includes a reference pattern having slanting lines, which is provided outside a reading range and read by image sensors arranged at separate positions in a sub-scanning direction. A reference-position determining unit detects one of the slanting lines in the reference pattern based on image data output from one of the image sensors so that a position of the image data when one of the slanting lines is detected is determined as a reference position. First and second delay units have line memories which store image data read out from an original image having lines, the delay units delaying outputting of the image data from the line memories line by line. First and second determining units determine image data having color values at imaginary points. An error measurement unit selects one of the imaginary points whose image data has a minimum difference between the color values of the image data. First and second line correcting units output image data having the color values at a corrected position of each picture element by using an interpolation function, the interpolation function having a set of correction factors determined based on a distance between the selected imaginary point and the reference position.

    • An extra data adding unit for an electrophotographic copier and others which allows date, time, page number, managerial number and other extra data, as distinguished from document data, to be copied together with an original document. The unit is provided with a thin flat configuration. A first display section for displaying extra data is provided on one surface of the unit while a second display section for monitoring the extra data and switches for setting modes and data are provided on the other surface of the unit. A battery for powering the unit is removably contained in the unit. That surface of the unit on which the monitor display section and switches are disposed is constituted by a white, light diffusing surface except for its area where the first display section is located. The position of the first display area is indicated on the other surface of the unit. A means for sensing light which illuminates a document is disposed in the vicinity of at least a pair of portions of the first display section which are positioned diagonally to each other. To discriminate the data from the document data, a fixed pattern is provided on that surface of the unit where the data display section is arranged. The fixed pattern bifunctions as the light sensing means or, alternatively, at least a part of the fixed pattern defines a light inlet for the light sensing means.

    • A beam focusing lens having an optical axis for focusing at a point of focus a light beam having different angles of divergence in orthogonal directions perpendicular to the optical axis consists of one or two lens components, each of which may be a single lens element and made of plastic and each of which has positive refractive power. At least one lens surface is an anamorphic aspherical surface that is not a cylindrical surface, that has no cross-section perpendicular to the optical axis that is circular with a finite radius of curvature, and that is defined by a particular aspherical equation. Another lens surface may be a cylindrical aspherical surface defined by another particular aspherical equation. The beams focusing lens may satisfy certain conditions related to optical element spacings, refractive index of a single lens element, and magnifications, and may focus light from a semiconductor laser into an optical fiber.

    • Timers measure the length of time for the leading edge of the first copy sheet to reach a sensing point at the discharge side of the machine after the copy operation is started and de-energize the machine if the measured time is longer than a predetermined time value, indicating that the first sheet jammed and did not reach the sensing point. If the first sheet reaches the sensing point in less than the predetermined time indicating proper feeding thereof, the length of time between the sensing of the leading edge and the trailing edge of the first sheet at the sensing point is measured, and the machine is deenergized if the measured time is longer than another predetermined value, indicating that the first sheet jammed at the sensing point. If the first sheet passes the sensing point normally (the machine is not de-energized), the length of time between the sensing of the trailing edge of the first sheet and the leading edge of the second sheet at the sensing point is measured, and the machine is de-energized if the measured time is longer than still another predetermined value, indicating that the second sheet jammed and did not reach the sensing point. If the second sheet passes the sensing point normally (the machine is not de-energized), the latter two operations are alternately performed for subsequent sheets until a jam is detected and the machine de-energized or the copying operation is completed without a jam.
