    • A high pressure boundary seal adjacent at least one of the bearings of the spindle motor. The motor itself includes a shaft, typically a fixed shaft and a rotor supported by bearings and rotating outside the shaft. The high-pressure boundary seal comprises a ring which surrounds the shaft across a small gap and is supported from and rotates with the rotor or hub. In a first embodiment, a herringbone pattern is defined on the inner surface of the ring or the outer surface of the shaft. The upper and lower sections of the herringbone pattern are substantially equal so that a zone of high pressure is established at about the center of the pattern. This high pressure boundary zone prevents the flow of any contaminants from the interior of the motor or the bearing between the shaft and the sealing ring out into the interior section of the disc drive housing where they could potentially contaminate the disc.

    • A fluid dynamic bearing including a sleeve and a counterplate captured within a shoulder on the sleeve and including a threaded mounting extension for mounting the assembly from a base or the like. A rotating shaft is incorporated within the sleeve; the shaft includes a thrust plate which rotates in a recess defined between the counterplate and the sleeve. To incorporate this assembly into a disc drive or the like, the threaded mounting extension only needs to be mounted within a base, with a nut screwed over the threaded mounting. The base typically includes a raised portion; the sleeve is cantilevered from this base for further stability and eliminate the possibility of vibration of the shaft and sleeve with rotation of the shaft. The end of the shaft distal from the threaded mounting supports a hub which in turn supports a backiron and magnet. The base supports a stator aligned with the magnet; energization of the stator will cause rotation of the hub and the shaft.

    • For a motor having fluid dynamic bearing(s) defined by surfaces of relatively rotatable motor members, aspects include providing a capillary reservoir between relatively irrotatable surfaces. The capillary reservoir may comprise a tapering gap that is vented to a gaseous environment through one end of the gap and is in fluidic communication with the fluid dynamic bearing(s) through another end of the gap. The gap may be axial, and the capillary reservoir may be disposed coaxially with one or more of the fluid dynamic bearing(s) about an axis of rotation. The capillary reservoir may extend from proximate a top portion of the motor to proximate a bottom portion of the motor.
