    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soft ground improving method by vacuum consolidation, and drain members usable for the method for improving efficiency of field work and positively driving vertical drain members to efficiently improve the soft ground.
      SOLUTION: In this soft ground improving method by vacuum consolidation, the water permeable vertical drain members 11 are driven into the soft ground 1, and pressure in the vertical drain members is reduced by a pressure reducing means to drain water in the soft ground through the vertical drain members. The vertical drain member has a length corresponding to the insertion depth into the soft ground, and an airtight cap 12 connecting a drain tube member 13 leading to the pressure reducing means is mounted to the upper end of the vertical drain member. The vertical drain member is inserted into the soft ground, with the airtight cap placed on the upper side until the depth of the airtight cap is 50 cm or more from an upper face 10 and reaches the underground water level face 2.
