    • This invention provides a method of storing encoded data on an article comprising applying said data on a surface of the article, as an encodement invisible to the human eye under normal viewing conditions. The invention also provides materials for use in said method. This invention comprises an article having on a surface thereof data represented by a material applied to the article that forms a differential light pattern when illuminated which is capable of being read by a sensor capable of detecting said differential light pattern, said material being substantially invisible to the human eye under normal viewing conditions; wherein the light absorbance of at least a portion of the surface of the article underlying said data is different from the absorbance of the material comprising the data under the conditions in which the data is read.

    • This invention relates to a latex composition comprising water as a continuous phase and, as the dispersed phase, hydrophobic polymer particles having associated therewith an infrared polymethine dye having covalently bonded thereto a phenylenediamine moiety. It further relates to a process for associating dye with polymer particles in a latex composition comprising the steps of: (1) forming a dye solution by dissolving a polymethine dye having covalently bonded thereto a phenylenediamine moiety in a water miscible or immiscible organic solvent; (2) forming a latex by dispersing hydrophobic polymer particles in an aqueous continuous phase; (3) blending the latex with the dye solution; and (4) loading of the polymer particles by removing the organic solvent, thereby forming a latex having the polymethine dye associated therewith.

    • This invention relates to a process for making polymer-dye particles comprising, in order: I) forming a colorant mixture comprising a water insoluble dye and an organic medium containing at least one ethylenically-unsaturated monomer; II) combining the colorant mixture with an aqueous mixture comprising a surfactant and a co-stabilizer to form a colorant mixture/aqueous mixture; III) causing the colorant mixture/aqueous mixture to form a stable aqueous droplet mixture via strong agitation; and IV) initiating polymerization to form composite polymer-dye particles comprising a colorant phase and a polymer phase; wherein an addition polymerization initiator is added prior to initiating polymerization. It further relates to composite polymer dye particles prepared by the above process and to composite polymer dye particles comprising a colorant phase containing a water insoluble dye, and a polymer phase, said particles being associated with a co-stabilizer.
