摘要： An engine with a row of cylinders is provided with two intake ports and intake valves and two exhaust ports and exhaust valves for each cylinder. The intake ports are arranged on one side of a center line of the row of cylinders, adjacent to each other, and side by side in a direction parallel to the cylinder row. The exhaust ports are arranged on another side of the center line, adjacent to each other, and side by side in the direction parallel to the cylinder row so that their centers are located at a distance apart which is larger than a distance at which centers of the intake ports are separated. The cylinder is formed with a "squish" surface between the exhaust ports which provides a squish area between the cylinder head and piston. This produces a squish or compressed flow of the air-fuel mixture to the exhaust ports in the combustion chamber.

The return passage is made available to the exhaust gas when the engine operates within an area, other than the specified area, of engine operating conditions.

摘要： Disclosed is an exhaust gas recirculation system for an engine having a high compression ratio or with a supercharger. An outside EGR duct connecting the exhaust system to the intake system is provided with a first control valve, which has a second outside EGR duct bypassing the first control valve. The second EGR duct has a second EGR control valve and a cooler. When the engine exists in an extremely low load state, the first and second control valves are closed to inhibit the outside EGR. In the light load state, the first control valve is opened while the second control valve is closed, thereby allowing recirculation of the EGR gases having high temperature and reducing the pumping loss. In the high load state, the first control valve is being closed while opening the second control valve, thereby increasing a recirculation ratio of EGR gases cooled by the cooler and performing both an improvement of anti-knocking performance and a decrease in pumping loss, as well as reducing the heat load of the exhaust system and within the engine.

摘要： The supercharged internal combustion engine is so adapted as to set the air-fuel ratio to become a lean air-fuel ratio which is leaner than stoichiometric and lean enough to maximize improvements in a rate of consumption of fuel, for example, to the A/F ratio of 16, when the supercharger exists in such a supercharging region as demonstrating its sufficient degree of supercharging capability. When the air-fuel ratio is made lean in the supercharging region, exhaust gases are recirculated into the intake system of the engine, in addition to a mixed fuel. Preferably, the exhaust gases having lower temperatures are recirculated at the time of a high load of the engine in the supercharging region, while the exhaust gases having higher temperatures are recirculated at the time of a low load of the engine therein.

The arrangement structure comprises a driveshaft 50 arranged along a vehicle-rearward lateral surface of the engine 1 facing in a rearward direction of the vehicle, to rotatably drive a front wheel, and a flange section 28a provided as a joining section between two members (12, 15) constituting the engine 1, to protrude in the rearward direction of the vehicle and at a height position below that of the driveshaft 50, wherein the sensor 42 is mounted to the vehicle-rearward lateral surface of the engine 1 at a height position located above the flange section 28a and in overlapping relation with the driveshaft 50 when viewed from a rear side of the vehicle. The arrangement structure of the present invention is capable of more reliably protecting the sensor mounted to the engine against foreign objects, such as water and a pebble, to adequately maintain performance of the sensor on a long-term basis.

摘要： The engine is provided with an auxiliary chamber having an auxiliary chamber port with an opening communicated with the combustion chamber. The auxiliary chamber port is arranged to be opened or closed with an auxiliary chamber valve. The timing of closing the auxiliary chamber valve is in between a final stage of compression stroke in which the temperature within the cylinder becomes higher and an initial stage of explosion stroke. On the other hand, the timing of opening the auxiliary chamber valve is in a middle stage of the compression stroke, thereby allowing the mixed fuel cooled in the auxiliary chamber to be replaced with a portion of the mixed fuel in the combustion chamber, thereby lowering the temperature within the cylinder.

摘要： In a state in which the engine is unloaded and the number of engine rotation is low, an overlap period of time during which the intake valve and the exhaust valve are both open is extended during the cold time, as compared with during the warm time. The extension of the overlap period of time causes gases remaining in the cylinders to increase, thereby making the burning of the fuel slow and elevating the temperature of the exhaust gases to thereby elevate the temperature of the cylinder head of the engine. A variation in the number of engine rotation, particularly a decrease in the number of engine rotation, resulting from the increase in the residual gases can be prevented by increasing the amount of intake air. Further, the temperature of the cylinder head can be elevated due to an increase in the amount of the supplied fuel resulting from the increase in the amount of the intake air.
