    • PURPOSE: To obtain activated carbon of high quality in high yield at a low cost, by passing a current directly through electrodes to a raw carbon material using a closed vertical furnace of specific structure, introducing superheated steam therethrough, and carrying out continuously drying, heating, activating and cooling steps.
      CONSTITUTION: A drying furnace 26, heating furnace 27, upper activating furnace 28, middle activating furnace 29 and lower activating furnace 30, etc. are provided in a closed vertical furnace chamber, and the inner walls of the respective furnaces are formed into prisms. Furthermore, electrode plates 35 are provided internally on the opposite inner walls of the respective furnaces, and plural electrode plates 36 are provided parallel to the opposite walls at regular intervals in the horizontal direction of the furnace space in the respective furnaces. Blowing inlets 41 and 42 for superheated steam are provided in the upper activating furnace 28 and the middle activating furnace 29. A raw carbon material is fed from a feed tank 25, and a current is passed from electrode plates 35 and 36 directly to the raw carbon material. Superheated steam is then introduced to carry out continuously the respective drying, heating, and activating steps, and the resultant material is cooled in a cooling tank 31 to produce the aimed activated carbon.
