    • When a vehicle is halted with the transmission in a forward drive range, an input clutch is disengaged to enhance the fuel efficiency and, at the same times a hill-hold brake is engaged to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward on a steep up-slope.     • To achieve a predetermined speed by engaging or releasing friction engagement elements of an auxiliary shift mechanism, a fluid pressure changeover valve is switched to a position for communication between a regulated pressure input port and an output port, so that regulated fluid pressure from a pressure regulating valve is supplied through second shift mechanism-side shift valves to the friction engagement elements of the auxiliary shift mechanism to be engaged or released. This position switch of the changeover valve also connects a line pressure input port to an output port whereby line pressure is supplied to the main shift mechanism-side shift valves to maintain the main shift mechanism in a predetermined speed state. To achieve a predetermined speed by a shift in the main shift mechanism, the regulated pressure input port is connected to the output port providing communication with the main shift mechanism shift valves, and the line pressure input port becomes connected to the output port providing communication with the auxiliary shift mechanism shift valves.

    • During transmission shifts, a band brake is used in either a self-loosening direction in which an engaging force thereof is not sensitive to variations in hydraulic pressure or a self-tightening direction in which the engaging force is sensitive to variations in hydraulic pressure. In the self-loosening direction, a second regulated hydraulic pressure generated by a second pressure regulating valve (B-4 control valve) in accordance with a control hydraulic pressure generated by a second (throttle-pressure-control) linear solenoid valve in a margin control region thereof is supplied to a hydraulic servo of the fourth brake (band brake). In this clutch-to-clutch shift, a first regulated hydraulic pressure generated by a first pressure regulating valve (a shift-pressure control valve) in accordance with a control hydraulic pressure generated by a first (pressure-regulation) linear solenoid valve is supplied to a hydraulic servo of a third (UD direct) clutch. In the self tightening direction, the first regulated hydraulic pressure generated by the first pressure regulating valve (the shift-pressure control valve) is supplied to the hydraulic servo of the fourth brake (band brake).

    • A control system for control of a clutch interposed between a fluid transmission unit and a speed change unit in a vehicular automatic transmission. The control system includes a first R.P.M. detector for detecting clutch input side R.P.M. and a second R.P.M. detector for detecting clutch output side R.P.M. A stop state detector determines if the vehicle is at a standstill and a starting operation detector detects a starting operation by the driver. The hydraulic control unit includes a hydraulic servo for applying/releasing the input clutch, a control signal oil pressure generating solenoid valve for generating a control signal oil pressure, a control valve for regulating a forward running range pressure according to the control signal oil pressure to generate a control oil pressure; a change signal oil pressure generating solenoid valve for generating a change signal oil pressure and a change-over valve switchable by the change signal oil pressure, between a first position in which it feeds the forward running range pressure to the hydraulic servo, and a second position in which it feeds the control oil pressure to the hydraulic servo. A failure is decided if the clutch input/output R.P.M. difference is over a set value which is set on the basis of the clutch input/output R.P.M. difference when the starting operation is detected by the starting operation detector. A fail-safe feature causes a shift output to a higher speed gear stage, over-riding a control signal from the pressure booster, when a failure is decided, to output the change signal to the solenoid of the control signal oil pressure solenoid valve to thereby bring the change-over valve into the first position.

    • The automatic transmission equipped with the control system of this invention is combined with a coupling for transmitting the rotation of the engine to the transmission and includes: a clutch which is applied when a forward running range is selected; a hydraulic servo which receives an oil pressure for applying the clutch; and a hydraulic control unit for controlling the oil pressure to the hydraulic servo. The hydraulic control unit includes: a manual valve which, when moved to a forward drive position by the operation of a shift lever, receives oil pressure from an oil pressure source, and supplies that oil pressure as a forward range oil pressure in a first oil passage; a regulator valve for regulating the oil pressure coming from the oil pressure source to thereby generate a regulated oil pressure in a second oil passage; a change-over valve switchable between (1) a first position for supplying the forward range oil pressure to a third oil passage and (2) a second position for supplying the regulated oil pressure to the third oil passage; a fourth oil passage for feeding the regulated oil pressure to the hydraulic servo while bypassing the change-over valve; and a one-way valve arranged in the fourth oil passage for allowing oil flow only in the direction from the regulator valve to the hydraulic servo.
