    • A vehicle wheel bearing apparatus which reduces the weight, size and number of parts and also prevents ingress of rain water or dusts and leakage of differential gear oil has an axle housing supported under a body of a vehicle. A hollow drive shaft is inserted into the axle housing. A wheel bearing is arranged between the drive shaft and an opening of the axle housing and is structured as a unit including a wheel hub and a double row rolling bearing. The wheel bearing includes an inner member with a wheel hub integrally formed with a wheel mounting flange on one end and an axially extending cylindrical portion. At least one inner ring is press-fit onto the cylindrical portion of the wheel hub. The inner ring is formed with at least one of the inner raceway surfaces on its outer circumferential surface. An outer member is arranged around the inner member and formed with double row outer raceway surfaces on its inner circumferential surface opposite to the inner raceway surfaces. Double row rolling elements are arranged between the inner and outer raceway surfaces of the inner member and the outer member. A cage freely rollably holds the rolling elements. Seals seal an annular space between the inner member and the outer member. A cap, having a metal core formed from steel, is press-fit into an end of a central bore of the wheel hub.

    • A bearing apparatus for a driving wheel of a vehicle has an outer member (2), inner member (5, 6), rolling elements (4), outer joint member (61) and a cover (11, 67). The outer member (2) is formed with double row outer raceway surfaces (2a) on its inner peripheral surface The inner member (5, 6) include a wheel hub (2) with an integrally formed wheel mounting flange (7) at one end and an axially extending cylindrical portion (5b, 13b) of a smaller diameter. At least one inner ring (6) is press fit onto the cylindrical portion (5b, 13b). The outer joint member (61) of a constant velocity universal joint (53) is integrally formed with a shaft portion (60) which is inserted into the inner member (5, 6) in a torque transmitting manner and is axially fastened by a nut (63) so that it abuts the inner member (5, 6). Lubricant is applied to the end face of the inner member (6) that abuts the outer joint member (61). The cover (11, 17) is mounted on the end of the inner member (6). The cover (11, 17) has a fitting portion (11a, 17a) adapted to be inserted into the cylindrical portion (5b, 13b) and an annular bottom portion (11c, 17b) to cover the end of the inner member (6).

A wheel speed detecting sensor (20) is integrally molded with the sensor holder (15) and arranged opposite to the encoder (19), via a predetermined radial gap. The encoder (19) has an annular ring configuration and its characteristics alternately and equidistantly vary along its circumferential direction. A seal is arranged at the inboard side of the encoder (19). The seal includes first and second annular sealing plates (21, 22) mounted on the sensor holder (15) and the inner ring (6), respectively, and opposite toward each other. The encoder (19) is mounted on the second sealing plate (22).

The outer side seal of the seals has a metal core and a sealing member with side lips and a grease lip. The side lips and the grease lip sliding contact the metal annulus. The metal annulus overhang portion opposes the outer member via a slight radial gap and is formed with a flared configuration that gradually expands toward its end at a predetermined slant angle.
