    • A recording apparatus has a nozzle (10a) containing a viscous substance (11) of a viscosity not lower than 300 cP. A recording electrode (12) is disposed on the nozzle (10a) at a position near the forward end of the nozzle (10a). A meniscus (13) of the viscous substance (11) is formed on the forward end of the nozzle (10a), and then an electric pulse signal corresponding to an image signal is applied to the recording electrode (12) to vibrate the meniscus (13) or to separate a small droplet of the viscous substance (11) from the meniscus (13) and to make the droplet fly. The droplet adheres to a recording medium (15) disposed opposite to the nozzle (10a) for recording. The timing of a droplet discharging operation for thus discharging droplets of the viscous substance (11) and the discharge amount of the viscous substance (11) can be controlled through the control of the pulse width or the amplitude of the voltage pulses of the electric pulse signal.

    • A liquid crystal display, using a ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibiting mono-stability, which makes it possible to control the direction of the spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric liquid crystal. The liquid crystal display includes: a first alignment treatment substrate having a first alignment layer which is a rubbed layer; a second alignment treatment substrate having a second alignment layer which is a photo alignment layer using a photo-dimerization type material; and a liquid crystal layer containing a ferroelectric liquid crystal and held between the first alignment treatment substrate and the second alignment treatment substrate. The ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibits mono-stability, and when a negative voltage is applied to a second electrode layer of the second alignment treatment substrate, a molecular direction of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is changed by about 2 times a tilt angle of the ferroelectric liquid crystal parallel to a surface of the substrate.

    • A primary object of the present invention is to provide a process for the production of a pattern-forming body, the process enabling the formation of a highly precise pattern, requiring no post-exposure treatment and being free from a fear as to the deterioration of the pattern-forming body itself because no photocatalyst is contained in the produced pattern-forming body. In the present invention, the above problem can be solved by providing a process for the production of a pattern-forming body, the process comprising disposing a catalyst-containing layer-side substrate containing at least a photocatalyst-containing layer and a pattern-forming body substrate containing a characteristic-changeable layer which is changed in characteristics by the action of the photocatalyst in at least said photocatalyst-containing layer such that the photocatalyst-containing layer is in contact with the characteristic-changeable layer, followed by performing exposure to thereby change the characteristics of the exposed portion of the characteristic-changeable layer and thereafter dismounting the photocatalyst-containing layer-side substrate, thereby obtaining a pattern-forming body having a pattern which has been changed in characteristics on the characteristic-changeable layer.

    • A main object of the invention is to provide a liquid crystal display using a ferroelectric liquid crystal, which can give mono-domain alignment of the ferroelectric liquid crystal without forming alignment defects such as zigzag defects, hairpin defects and double domains and which is so remarkably good in alignment stability that the alignment thereof can be maintained even if the temperature of the liquid crystal is raised to the phase transition point or higher. The present invention achieves the object by providing a liquid crystal display comprising a ferroelectric liquid crystal sandwiched between two substrates, wherein an electrode and a photo alignment layer are each successively formed on opposite faces of the two substrates facing each other, a constituent material of the respective photo alignment layer is a photoreactive material which generates a photoreaction to give anisotropy to the photo alignment layer; and the constituent material of the respective photo alignment layer has different composition from each other with the ferroelectric liquid crystal sandwiched therebetween.

    • A process for producing a liquid crystal display having less alignment defects, which seldom causes aligning disorder at the boundary where ferroelectric liquid crystals allowed to flow are brought into contact with each other when the ferroelectric liquid crystals are coated on the substrate flow. The process includes a first alignment layer formation step and a liquid crystal coating step. The liquid crystal coating step is a step of linearly coating the ferroelectric liquid crystals on a first alignment layer of a liquid crystal side substrate in a direction substantially perpendicular or substantially parallel to the alignment treatment direction conducted in the first alignment layer formation step.
