    • A method of parking the head by first moving the head toward the inner diameter of the disc an then back across the disc and parking the head on a flat part of a ramp. In one embodiment, a moderate voltage on the motor drives the head toward the inner diameter of the disc until the head hits the inner crash stop and then a moderate current drives the head back across the disc to give the head enough momentum to get to the flat part of he ramp. In another embodiment, more stages, each having a different voltage, are used to get better control of the velocity of the head as it is being driven across the disc. A higher voltage is also used to turn the head to move toward the inner diameter of the disc when it is moving fast toward the outer diameter. A retract circuit controls the movement of the head during retract. To be able to drive the head in the tow directions, the retract circuit needs to be bipolar, containing both a current source and a current sink. Counters are used to time the driving of the head. Driving the head toward the outer diameter of the disc across substantially the entire disc permits the head to gather momentum as the head approaches the ramp, and use a lower current to ensure that the head gets to the flat art of the ramp where it is then parked. Parking the head on the flat part of the ramp prevents the head from landing on the disc, preventing damage to the head and the disc, and eliminating the possibility of loss or corruption of data due to the head landing on the disc.

    • A method and apparatus for switching a motor between bipolar and unipolar mode. During each phase of the bipolar mode, one of the coils floats and has a back emf. In the method, first, a mode change signal requesting a change between the bipolar mode and the unipolar mode is received. Second, the back emf across the floating coil is monitored. Third, a point in time when the back emf equals the center tap voltage is detected. Last, the motor is switched between the bipolar mode and the unipolar mode at a point away from point in time when the back emf across the floating coil equals the center tap voltage. Various circuitry is also disclosed for switching a motor between a bipolar mode and a unipolar mode.

    • A method and circuit for braking a forward rotation of a rotor of a polyphase DC motor. A commutation sequencer is incremented by several phases to produce an incremented commutation sequence to produce a magnetic flux vector that lags a magnetic pole of the motor. Driving currents are applied to coils of the motor in accordance with the incremented commutation sequence to brake the rotor. The method is implemented in a circuit that has a sequencer for incrementally generating sets of commutation signals to select stator coils for energization to rotate the rotor. A power stage to which the commutation signals are applied energizes the selected coils in accordance with the commutation signals. A circuit interrupts the energization of the selected coils and the commutation sequence is altered to produce a sequence that produces a negative torque on the rotor. Circuits are also provided to inhibit application of the altered commutation sequence until recirculation currents in the power stage caused by the coils in response to the reduction of the input voltage have fallen below a predetermined level, and to inhibit application of the altered commutation sequence until a voltage on a sense resistor between the power stage and a reference potential has fallen below a predetermined level after an operation of the circuit for interrupting the energization of the selected coils.

    • A bootstrap reference circuit includes a shunt regulator for generating a reference voltage at a first node, a current source generating a current, and a current mirror coupling the current to the shunt regulator for supplying the shunt regulator. In operation, when the shunt regulator is powering up, the current has an increasing magnitude when a voltage at the first node is less than a predefined voltage value where the predefined voltage value is less than the reference voltage. Furthermore, the current has a decreasing magnitude when the voltage at the first node is greater than the predefined voltage value. In one embodiment, the shunt regulator includes a bandgap reference circuit and the predefined voltage value is less than the bandgap voltage of 1.24 volts.
