    • Novel hydrogels and hydroplastics are described which exhibit temperature dependent, reversible phase separations and clear-opaque transitions between 1.degree. and 100.degree. C. These materials consist of linear or crosslinked random copolymers of N,N-dimethylacrylamide with alkyl- and alkoxyalkyl acrylates. The water solubility and water swelling of these polymers is extremely temperature dependent; they show sharply defined clear to opaque transitions in their water swollen state and as soluble polymers shown Lower Critical Solution Temperatures (LCST). They are useful in drug delivery systems, absorption and extraction processes and as qualitative thermometers, thermosensors and self-activating sunscreens, for example in greenhouses.

    • This invention describes polymers which are obtained by copolymerization of 15-85 wt % N,N-dimethylacrylamide with about 15-85% of a fluorinated monomer such as perfluoroalkyl-alkylene acrylate or methacrylate with from 3 to 25 fluorine atoms and optionally, 0-50 wt % other acrylates or methacrylates and 0-20 wt %, but not more than 5 mol % of a polyvinyl functional crosslinking agent. These polymers are machinable in the dry state and form clear hydrogels with about 25-75 wt % water content and which possess oxygen-permeabilities 3-7 times higher than conventional hydrogels of similar water content. In the absence of crosslinking, the novel polymers are plasticized by water, forming clear hydroplastics with 30-70 wt % water content. The crosslinked polymers are especially useful for fabricating contact lenses for extended wear by either cutting and polishing a xerogel button, or by spin casting or direct molding in bulk or in solution.

    • The perfluoroalkylthio-substituted half esters and amides of succinic acid having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.f is a perfluoroalkyl, R.sup.1 alkylene optionally interrupted with oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen atom, X is oxygen or NH, y is zero or 1, Q is a polyether or polyester diradical moiety having a molecular weight of 300 to 5000 or a polysiloxane having 5 to 80 repeating units and A is hydrogen, hydroxyl, amino, alkoxy of 1 to 21 carbons, phenoxy, alkylphenoxy of 7 to 20 carbons, dialkylamino where each alkyl has 1 to 18 carbons or the group ##STR2## said compounds being prepared by first reacting maleic anhydride with a polyether, polyester, diamine or a polysiloxane derivative of an alcohol or a primary amine and then reacting the product with a perfluoroalkyl alkylene thiol. The novel compounds are useful as surfactants with specific applications as wetting agents in coatings, waxes, emulsions, paints and resins.
