    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biological cleaning method and an apparatus for contaminated soil capable of controlling ventilation according as degradation activity of microorganisms. SOLUTION: An oxygen analyzer 5 is disposed in the contaminated soil S and a decrease rate (δ[O 2 ]/δt) of residual oxygen concentration [O 2 ] is measured by using the oxygen analyzer 5. The contaminated soil S is cleaned while the ventilation volume into the contaminated soil S is controlled in accordance with the decrease rate (δ[O 2 ]/δt). The oxygen consumption C 02 in the contaminated soil S is calculated from the decrease rate (δ[O 2 ]/δt) of residual oxygen concentration [O 2 ] and the soil air volume VSPACE of the contaminated soil S and the ventilation volume into the contaminated soil S is controlled in accordance with the oxygen consumption C 02 . Further preferably, a thermometer 6 is disposed in the contaminated soil S and a soil temperature TSOIL is measured by using the thermometer 6. The ventilation into the contaminated soil is then controlled in accordance with the oxygen consumption C 02 and the soil temperature TSOIL. The ventilation volume is preferably controlled by each of respective areas by disposing the oxygen analyzers 5 and/or the thermometers 6 into a plurality of the areas of the contaminated soil S.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an instrument for measuring the gas present in the ground surface layer, so well-designed not to be a large-scale framework as even to allow the easy setup, transport and move because of being, as a whole, constructed mainly of a metal pole, also to allow the instrument itself having a built-in gas detecting element to be disposed to the pole above the ground, separated away from the measurement location, wherein a gas suction pipe having a gas suction port at the end edge thereof be only inserted into the ground, to thereby sufficiently serve the purpose thereof without worry about such cloggings or the like even to thereby simplify a maintenance service job, and, further, to make it possible to measure the object without difficulty even as deep as one meter down in the soil. SOLUTION: The gas measuring instrument 11 being accommodated in a case 10 receiving it is disposed atop the metal pole 8, and the gas suction pipe 15 having the gas suction port 16 at the end edge thereof is protruded out of the lower part of the pole 8, then being allowed to pass integrally through the pole 8 and to be connected to the instrument 11, and an insertion-preventing member 13 of a larger diameter than that of a hole 21 to be made in the ground is also arranged t the outer periphery of the lower part of the pole 8.
