    • A biopsy aspirating device for gathering soft tissue samples comprising a syringe having a barrel, with a plunger sealingly received within the barrel to form a chamber with a controllably variable volume, and with a hollow sample-receiving needle mounted on a needle mounting boss attached to the barrel. The needle mounting boss has a bore formed therein to provide communication between the needle bore and the barrel with sample blocking means having an abutment surface thereon being provided to engage the sample and retain the sample in a position to prevent direct contact between the sample and the bore formed in the boss. The plunger is secured to the conventional gripping shaft, and the gripping shaft has means for releasably engaging the proximate end of the barrel at controllable axial dispositions therealong, in use, the needle Is used to puncture the body, and the tip of the needle is advanced until it reaches a point adjacent the organ from which the tissue is to be collected. At this point, the plunger is withdrawn and locked into engagement with the barrel, so as to form a partial vacuum within the barrel. The advancement of the needle is continued, thereby gathering a sample of tissue from the desired organ, with the tissue sample moving the needle shank until contact is made with the abutment surface.

    • Means for obtaining muscle tissue specimens from a body and comprising a generally cylindrical shaft having a tapered and pointed distal puncturing and cutting tip, and with coaxially disposed sheath means having a sharpened forward cutting edge slidably enveloping the shaft. A sample receiving cavity is formed in the shaft and is provided with a generally sharpened hook in the forward portion of the cavity. The hook has a point directed toward the proximate end of the shaft and comprises an overhanging barb forming a portion of the sample retaining cavity. The sheath is slidable over the shaft between retracted and extended dispositions, with the forward edges of the sheath enclosing the barb when the sheath Is In its forward predetermined disposition, and with the sharpened tip of the barb being exposed when the sheath is in retracted disposition. The forward sharpened cutting edge of the sheath forms a cutting edge which separates that portion of the sample retained within the sample receiving cavity from the bulk of the tissue, with the separation being in the form of a clean extraction cut. For removal of the sample, simple retraction of the device is possible.

    • A soft tissue biopsy aspirating device for gathering soft tissue samples comprising a syringe having a barrel, with a reciprocably movable plunger sealingly received within the barrel to form a chamber with a controllably variable volume, and with a hollow sample-receiving needle mounted on a needle mounting boss attached to the barrel. The needle mounting boss has a rigid needle mounting shaft coupled on the end thereof, the shaft having a bore formed therein with a longitudinal segment and a radial segment to provide communication between the hollow core of the needle and the barrel with sample blocking means having an angularly disposed abutment surface thereon being provided to arrest inward motion of the sample and retain the sample so obtained in a stable position to prevent direct contact between the sample and the bore formed in the shaft. The plunger is secured to the conventional gripping shaft, and the gripping shaft has means for releasably engaging the proximate end of the barrel at controllable axial dispositions therealong. In use, the needle is used to puncture the body, and the tip of the needle is advanced until it reaches a point adjacent the organ from which the soft tissue is to be collected.     • Biopsy needle means particularly adapted for the withdrawal of tissue through a cannula forced through or along an unnatural route into the interior of a live body or organ such as thyroid, spleen, or a tumor mass, the means comprising, in combination, a biopsy needle including a generally hollow axially flexible elongated needle having a generally uniform cylindrical configuration with an internal core of substantially constant internal diameter extending throughout the major portion of the axial length of the needle, said needle having a tapered distal tip with a cutting surface formed along the edges of the tip, the needle having substantial axial flexure, stylet means having an external configuration generally matching the configuration of said core and arranged to be received within the core of said hollow needle, the stylet means comprising a rigid shaft having a closed sharp tip arranged to extend distally from the tapered distal tip when the stylet is received within the core of the hollow needle. In addition, the biopsy needle means is provided with a sheath which has substantial axial flexure for accommodating relative motion of various organs within the body, and reducing or eliminating the occurrences of bleeding complications.

    • A microcautery device particularly adapted for use in connection with the cauterization of elongated unnatural openings of small diameter formed in a body, for example, for biopsy purposes, the device including a gripping handle having an elongated tubular metallic shaft of small diameter extending from one end of the handle. The metallic shaft consists of a shank portion having a generally cylindrical tip portion with an electrically resistive closed tip end coupled thereto at the end thereof, with the body of the tip portion extending in continuation with the shank portion. An electrically insulated highly conductive electrical conductor is disposed within the confines of the tubular shaft and extends from the handle to the tip of the shaft, and is electrically coupled to the tip portion along the inner surface of the closed tip end. A source of electrical energy is coupled across the electrical conductor and the proximate end of the tubular metallic shaft, so as to complete an electrical circuit. The cauterizing device is arranged to be inserted in the opening formed in the body being treated, energized to cauterizing temperatures, and removed slowly while heated so as to perform the cauterizing operation.
