摘要： Microporous pitch spheres prepared from pitch are oxidized at a temperature of from 100 DEG C to 500 DEG C in an atmosphere of an oxidative gas to produce pitch spheres containing not less than 10% by weight of combined oxygen. Then the combined oxygen-containing pitch spheres are heated at a temperature of from 150 DEG C to 700 DEG C in an atmosphere of ammonia gas to produce pitch spheres containing not less than 1.5% by weight combined nitrogen. The resultant pitch spheres are subsequently activated by a conventional method to produce activated carbon spheres containing more than 1% by weight of combined nitrogen.

摘要： Spheres of activated carbon are obtained by melting and mixing 100 parts by weight of pitch with 10 to 50 parts by weight of an aromatic solvent compatible with said pitch and 0.01 to 1 part by weight of a metal compound, molding the resultant molten mixture to form a plurality of spheres, immersing the formed spheres in an organic solvent which is compatible with said aromatic solvent and destitute of affinity for said pitch to extract said aromatic solvent from said spheres, infusibilizing the resultant porous pitch spheres having micro-pores and thereafter activating the porous pitch spheres in an atmosphere of ammonia gas at the temperature of 550 to 1000 DEG C. The activated carbon spheres thus produced are particularly useful as activated carbon for the desulfurization of a sulfurous acid gas-containing combustion exhaust gas and for treatment of waste liquor from a sulfite pulp process.

Soluble copolyimides are prepared from an aromatic diamine and a mixture of a major proportion of 1,2,3,4- and a minor proportion of 1,2,4,5-benzene tetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides. Specified diamines are 3,3 1 -diamino diphenyl ether, methane, sulphide and ketone. Polycondensation may be effected at -60‹ to 50‹ C. in a polar organic solvent e.g. N,N 1 - dimethyl acetamide or formamide, N - methyl pyrrolidone, dimethyl sulphoxide or pyridine to give a polyamide acid which may be treated with an imidizing agent, e.g. a molecular sieve or a mixture of pyridine, acetic anhydride and optionally benzene, to give a solution of the polyimide. The polyimide solutions may be used as a coating or adhesive for electric wire, for casting films or forming fibres by spinning into a non-solvent. The polyimide may be purified by precipitation in water-free benzene and redissolved in an organic polar solvent or sulphuric acid.

Mellophanic dianhydride (benzene-1,2,3,4- tetracarboxylic dianhydride) is prepared by reacting cyclohexane - 1,2,3,4 - tetracarboxylic acid and bromine at a temperature greater than 100‹ C. in a solvent to provide mellophanic acid and then dehydrating this, e.g. by heating in vacuo or with acetic anhydride. Suitable solvents include water, acetic acid and propionic acid. Cyclohexane - 1,2,3,4 - tetracarboxylic acid is prepared by oxidizing bicyclo[2,2,2].5.octene- 2,3 - dicarboxylic anhydride with HNO 3 in the presence of ammonium vanadate. KMnO 4 may also be used as oxidizing agent.
