    • One embodiment of the present invention relates to a method and apparatus for encoding an intra-prediction mode using variable length codes, as well as to a recording medium for same, which involve determining an intra-prediction mode of the current block, determining, as a most probable mode (MPM), the mode having the smallest mode number from among intra-prediction modes of encoded peripheral blocks, generating and allocating variable length codes for all of the intra-prediction modes, in the order of code length such that code with the shortest length comes first, according to the directional similarity to the MPM such that the mode with the highest directional similarity has the highest priority, and encoding the intra-prediction mode of the current block on the basis of the allocated variable length codes. The method and apparatus of the present invention generate efficient variable length codes in consideration of the high correlation existing in the intra-prediction modes of the current block and the peripheral blocks even in the event the intra-prediction mode of the current block does not match the MPM derived with reference to the peripheral blocks, and efficiently compressing information on the intra-prediction mode of the current block using the thus-generated variable length codes, thereby improving intra video encoding performance.
