    • Disclosed is a method for identifying content within a received information signal. The method comprises receiving (S6) an information signal; generating (S8) a first data set by selecting a sub-set of data (7) using filter data; and processing (S9) said information signal with reference to said first data set to determine whether said information signal comprises particular content. Advantageously, the method further comprises processing (S 12) the information signal with reference to a second data set (6) to determine whether said information signal comprises particular content. The invention allows content sharing sites such as YouTube to check whether uploaded files violate copyright rules in case the upload includes contents that was previously downloaded by the client. By keeping a list of contents that clients have downloaded, the server has an indication of a subset of contents that will likely be included in the next upload by the same client. As this subset is relatively small, a finer fingerprint resolution may be applied to this subset.

    • A method of watermarking a video signal comprises encoding the video signal using a plurality of encoding parameters and, during said encoding, varying a value of at least a selected one of said parameters with time according to a watermarking pattern, the selected parameter being a parameter that affects at least a type or an amount of information lost in encoding the signal. An example of a suitable parameter is a quantization factor used to encode the video signal. The quantization factor may correspond to a particular coefficient of a transform used to encode the video signal, and may, for example, be an element of a quantization matrix corresponding to a particular coefficient in a block DCT transform. The method may conveniently be implemented in devices with limited processing resources, such as existing DVRs, by means of a software update, yet enables those devices to imprint a signal they encode with a robust watermark which may survive subsequent decompression and recompression. In another aspect, a video signal is watermarked by modifying a magnitude of at least one selected non-dc spatial frequency component in a manner which varies with time according to a watermarking pattern. Corresponding watermark detection methods and watermarking devices are disclosed.

    • The invention relates to embedding a spread spectrum watermark in a data signal as well as to detection of the embedded watermark. A data signal (4) is encrypted (15) or received in the form of an encrypted data signal (9), the signal being encrypted by modifying (3) it in accordance with one or more entries of a look-up-table (2) in which an encryption table (6) is stored. The encryption is carried out by a first computing device (15) such as a server device. The watermark is actually embedded while decrypting (13) the signal. This takes place in a second computing device (16), possibly in a client device, in a similar manner. The client device employs a decryption table (8), which is a modified (i.e. watermarked) version of the encryption table (6). The decryption table may generated by the server and securely communicated to the client. The data signal is decrypted in accordance with entries of a look-up-table (12). The look-up-tables (2,12) in server and client are addressed by the same sequence of pointers generated by respective index generators (1). The mismatch between encryption table (6) and decryption table (8) causes the decrypted signal (14) to have an embedded watermark.
