摘要： A method and apparatus for controlling and stabilizing laser wavelengths in a dense wavelength division multiplexer (DWDM) transmission system. The lasers in the transmission system are each modulated in a known manner by a data signal. In addition, the lasers are each modulated by a plurality of test signals each having a predetermined frequency. At the optical receiver, a frequency analyzer examines the frequency test signals for distortions and/or changes in amplitude. Any distortions and/or changes in amplitude of the frequency test signals indicate a change in the wavelength of a corresponding laser. A control signal may be returned to the laser controller of each laser to regulate the laser wavelength. A fault signal may be generated indicating that the wavelength of a laser has changed, drifted, etc., more an acceptable amount.

摘要： An in-line pre-compensation circuit distorts an electronic information signal prior to using the signal to modulate a laser beam in order to compensate for distortions resulting from transmitting the resulting optical signal through an optical fiber. The pre-compensation circuit is dynamically adjustable for different lengths of optical fiber for simple installation and maintenance of the system. The adjustment can be made from a front panel of a laser transmitter during operation. Even though the optical signal is more distorted at the output of the laser transmitter, the optical signal that arrives at the receiver is less distorted.

摘要： A hybrid fiber cable network includes multiple nodes, each of which receive a first multi-carrier return signal from multiple customers with the carrier signals in a first frequency band. In a fiber-hub, one or more first multi-carrier signals are converted into a second multi-carrier signal with carrier signals in a second band. Each information signal that modulates a carrier signal in one of the first signal modulates a different higher frequency carrier signal in the second signal. A multitude of second multi-carrier signals are converted into respective optical signals with different respective optical wavelengths, multiplexed together in a common optical fiber, and transmitted back to the head-end. The first frequency band is the same for all the nodes, below 200 MHz, and preferably, from 5 to 50 MHz. The second frequency band is different for different nodes, above 200 MHz, and preferably, in a portion of the range between 300 and 1200 MHz to reduce crosstalk due to stimulated Ramon scattering (SRS). Preferably, each second frequency band is no more than one octave wide, and more preferably, no more than one half an octave wide.

摘要： An in-line pre-shaper for a laser transmitter distorts an electronic information signal to compensate for distortions resulting from the optical information signal provided by the laser transmitter, being transmitted through an optical cable, as well as, compensating for distortions resulting from using the electronic information signal to modulate the laser beam produced by the laser transmitter to provide the optical information signal. The pre-compensation reduces both second order and third order distortion of the optical signal for the combination of the laser and the optical cable. Even though the optical signal is more distorted at the output of the laser transmitter, the optical signal that arrives at the receiver is less distorted.
