    • A driver (2, 3, 4) for an active matrix display (1) comprises pixels (5) of a bi¬ stable material arranged at intersections of select lines (20) and data lines (30) between first electrodes (40) and a second electrodes (50) for receiving a pixel voltage (VP). The driver (2, 3, 4) comprises a select driver (2) which supplies select voltages (VS) to the select lines (20) to select a selected line of the pixels (5) during a line select period (TL). A data driver (3) supplies data signals (DA) to the selected line of pixels (5). A switch circuit (S) selectively couples the data signals (DA) to the associated first electrodes (40) of the selected line of pixels (5). And a controller (4) controls the switch circuit (S): (i) during a first period in time (Tl) to select, of the selected line of pixels (5), first selected pixels which should receive the pixel voltage (VP) within a first range for changing their optical state, and (ii) during a second period in time (T2) to select, of the selected line of pixels (5), second selected pixels which should receive the pixel voltage (VP) within a second range different than the first range for changing their optical state.

    • The invention relates to an illumination system (10) for illuminating a display device, and to the display device. The illumination system comprises a light distribution element (20 for distributing light across the display device. The light distribution element comprises a light output window (40), a rear wall (42) situated opposite the light output window, and edge walls (44, 46) extending between the light output window and the rear wall, at least one of the edge walls comprising a light input window (48) for admitting light into the light distribution element. The light distribution element further comprises specularly reflective light-outcoupling means (50) for specularly reflecting light from the light distribution element towards the display device via the light output window. A first light beam (100) comprises light of a first primary color (R) impinging on the light input window for coupling the light of the first primary color into the light distribution element. At least a second light beam (102, 104) comprises light of a second primary color (G, B) impinging on the light input window for coupling the light of the second primary color into the light distribution element, the second light beam being substantially not parallel to the first light beam. Use of specularly reflective outcoupling means yields a difference between an angle of incidence between the first and the second light beam. This difference is substantially preserved, which results in a color separation of the light emitted by the light distribution element towards the display device.

    • The present invention relates to an illumination system including a first sub¬ system comprising a first set of at least two differently colored light sources where the first set has a first spectral distribution, and a first light mixing device arranged in a direction of emission of light from the first set of light sources and configured to mix light emitted by the first set of light sources. The illumination system further includes a second sub-system comprising a second set of at least two light sources where the second set has a second spectral distribution, and a second light mixing device, also arranged in a direction of emission of light from the second set of light sources and configured to mix light emitted by the second set of light sources. The light sources are selected such that that the first and the second spectral distribution complement each other, so that a color rendering index (CRI) of light emitted from the illumination system is greater that the CRI of light emitted from each of the sub-systems. Furthermore, the first and the second sub-systems are arranged to emit at least one common color, such as a shade of white.
