    • An optical scanning device for scanning an information layer of a first optical record carrier having a first cover layer thickness and an information layer of a second optical record carrier having a second, different cover layer thickness. The device includes an objective lens system for converging a radiation beam on the information layers. The objective lens system includes a first lens element and a second lens element spaced apart along an optical axis. The objective lens system further includes a switchable optical element comprising a first fluid, and a chamber positioned between said first lens and said second lens. The objective lens system is switchable between a first configuration in which the first fluid occupies an optically active portion of the chamber such that the objective lens system has a first focal length for scanning the information layer of the first optical record carrier, and a second configuration in which the first fluid does not occupy the optically active portion of the chamber such that the objective lens system has a second, different focal length for scanning the information layer of the second optical record carrier. The objective lens system is arranged to satisfy the condition: Focal2-Focall > 0.9 (T2-T1)/N, where Tl is the first cover layer thickness, T2 is the second cover layer thickness, T2 > Tl, N is the refractive index of the second cover layer, Focal 1 is the first focal length, and Focal2 is the second focal length.

    • An optical scanning device for scanning optical record carriers having cover layers of different thicknesses. The scanning device has a first mode for scanning a first optical record carrier, a second mode for scanning a second optical record carrier and a third mode for scanning third optical record carrier. The device comprises an objective lens system and a switchable optical element having a first discrete state and a different, second discrete state. The element comprises: a fluid system including a first fluid and a different, second fluid (19) ; a wavefront modifier (17) ; and a fluid system switch for acting on the fluid system to switch between the first and second discrete states of the element. When the element is in the first discrete state, the wavefront modifier (17) is substantially covered by the first fluid, and when the element is in the second discrete state, the wavefront modifier (17) is substantially covered by the second fluid (19) . The wavefront modifier includes a non-periodic phase structure including a plurality of stepped annular zones separated by steps, the zones forming a non-periodic radial pattern, and is characterized in that the wavefront modifier further includes an aspherical surface. The scanning device is arranged to operate using the element in the second state to generate spherical aberration when in the second mode, the aspherical surface of the element in the second state compensating for more than half of the spherical aberration due to the objective lens system and second record carrier in combination.

    • An optical scanning device for scanning a multi-layer optical record carrier when positioned in a scanning location in the device, the device being adapted for scanning a first information layer at a first information layer depth within the record carrier and a second information layer at a second information layer depth within the record carrier. The device comprises: a radiation source for generating a radiation beam; an objective lens, located in an optical path between the radiation source and the scanning location, for converging a radiation beam to a spot on an information layer; and - an optical switching arrangement switchable between a first state, in which the device is arranged to scan a said first information layer, and a second state, in which the device is arranged to scan a said second information layer. The optical switching arrangement comprises a compensator arranged to generate a different amount of spherical aberration in a radiation beam when in said first state and when in said second state. The compensator is further arranged to generate a different amount of vergence in a radiation beam when in said first state and when in said second state. The different amounts of spherical aberration and vergence are selected such that a free working distance between said objective lens and said optical record carrier remains substantially constant when switching between said first and second states.
