    • An illumination system comprising at least two light sources arranged closely together and each emitting a unique light spectrum during operation, and an optical system (1). The optical system comprises an optical waveguide (4) with a coupling-in face (6) and a coupling-out face (7). The optical system further comprises a mirroring transition part (8) connecting the coupling-out face of the optical waveguide to a transparent light extraction panel (9). The transparent light extraction panel has an extraction structure (11) for coupling out light to the exterior. The optical waveguide and the extraction means are specularly reflecting, the mirror preferably being substantially specularly reflecting. Compared with the known illumination systems, the illumination system of the invention is relatively efficient and has an improved control of the light beam.

    • The invention relates to an illumination system (10, 101, 102, 40) for illuminating a display device (18). The illumination system (10, 101, 102, 40) comprises a conical reflector (15, 151, 152, 45) associated with the light source (12) for illuminating a light-exit window (16) arranged between the light source (12) and the display device (18). The reflector (15, 151, 152, 45) is arranged for reflecting light emitted by the light source (12) towards the light-exit window (16). The reflector (15, 151, 152, 45) is radially segmented into a plurality of reflector-cone segments (22, 25, 26). The plurality of reflector- cone segments (22, 25, 26) comprises at least one convex-cone segment (22) being convex shaped in a lateral direction with respect to a source axis (14) for lateral distribution of light emitted by the light source (12) over the light-exit window (16). The effect of the use of the convex-cone segment (22) is that light reflected from the reflector (15, 151, 152, 45) can be redistributed laterally over the light-exit window (16) in a predetermined manner which enables a uniform light distribution over the light-exit window (16). This is particularly beneficial for light-exit windows (16) having a polygonal shape (34, 35, 36).

    • The backlight illumination system has a plurality of parallel-arranged linear light sources (1, 1'), a light-emitting surface (5) and a reflector (10, 10') comprising a reflective region formed in symmetry on both sides of each light source. The reflective region includes: - a first reflective surface (11) close to the light source (1, 1') and arranged substantially horizontally, a second reflective surface (12) formed into either an angled or a concavely curved surface, a fourth reflective surface (14) formed into either an angled or a convexly curved surface, and a third reflective surface (13) formed into an angled surface, provided between the second and the fourth reflective surface, and arranged convexly with respect to the second reflective surface and concavely with respect to the fourth reflective surface. The third reflective surface is preferably oriented in such a way that incidence of direct light from the light source on the third reflective surface is prevented.
