    • An optical system having a first mode for scanning a first optical record carrier of a first type and having an information layer (2) at a first information layer depth (4), and a second mode for scanning a second optical record carrier of a second, different, type having an information layer (3) at a second, different, information layer depth (5), the optical system having a parameter which is variable. The optical system comprises a radiation source system (6 & 18) for generating a first radiation beam (7) in the first mode and a second, different, radiation beam (8) in the second mode; one or more optical elements for focusing either the first radiation beam (7) to a spot on the information layer (2) of the first record carrier in the first mode, or the second radiation beam (8) to a spot (26) on the information layer of the second record carrier in the second mode; and a compensator (16) having a phase structure comprising annular areas forming a non-periodic pattern of optical paths of different lengths. The compensator (16) is arranged to compensate a first wavefront deviation (WI) introduced during scanning of the information layer (2) of the first optical record carrier with said first radiation beam (7) in the first mode and is additionally arranged to compensate a second wavefront deviation (W2) introduced to said second radiation beam (8) upon variation of said parameter of the optical system in the second mode.

    • A scanning device is designed for optically scanning a first record carrier (1) having a first information plane (3) and a first transparent layer (2) of a first thickness and for scanning a second record carrier (18) having a second information plane (20) and a second transparent layer (19) of a second thickness different from the first thickness. The device comprises a radiation source (5, 22) for generating a radiation beam (6, 23) and an objective lens (9) for focusing the radiation beam through one of the transparent layers on one of the information layers. The radiation source comprising means for adapting the vergence of the radiation beam to a first value for scanning the first record carrier and to a second value for scanning the second record carrier. The objective lens has a convex surface (28) and a concave surface (29), the convex surface facing towards the radiation source. The combination of the change in vergence and the concave surface provides a large field of the objective lens, both when scanning the first and second record carrier.

    • A device for scanning a first and second type of optical record carriers ( 2; 40 ) generates a first and a second radiation beam for scanning the first and second type of record carriers, respectively, the first radiation beam having a first numerical aperture larger than the second numerical aperture of the second radiation beam. The device includes a non-periodic phase structure that does not affect the first radiation beam. The phase structure introduces an amount of spherical aberration in the second radiation beam for scanning the second type of record carriers for compensating the difference in spherical aberration required for scanning through the different thickness of the transparent layer ( 3; 41 ) of the first and second type of record carriers ( 2, 40 ). To reduce the amount of stray light on the detection system ( 25 ) from rays in the second radiation beam having a numerical aperture larger than the second numerical aperture, the phase grating introduces a discontinuity in the gradient of the wavefront deviation it introduces in the second radiation beam. The discontinuity allows spatial filtering in the plane of the detection system ( 25 ) of the desired and undesired rays of the second radiation beam.
