    • The invention relates to an illumination system (10) for illuminating a display device, and to the display device. The illumination system comprises a light distribution element (20 for distributing light across the display device. The light distribution element comprises a light output window (40), a rear wall (42) situated opposite the light output window, and edge walls (44, 46) extending between the light output window and the rear wall, at least one of the edge walls comprising a light input window (48) for admitting light into the light distribution element. The light distribution element further comprises specularly reflective light-outcoupling means (50) for specularly reflecting light from the light distribution element towards the display device via the light output window. A first light beam (100) comprises light of a first primary color (R) impinging on the light input window for coupling the light of the first primary color into the light distribution element. At least a second light beam (102, 104) comprises light of a second primary color (G, B) impinging on the light input window for coupling the light of the second primary color into the light distribution element, the second light beam being substantially not parallel to the first light beam. Use of specularly reflective outcoupling means yields a difference between an angle of incidence between the first and the second light beam. This difference is substantially preserved, which results in a color separation of the light emitted by the light distribution element towards the display device.

    • A luminescent concentrator for solar light is provided. The luminescent concentrator comprises a wavelength-selective filter, an energy concentrating area, and a luminescent material. The wavelength-selective filter is adapted to pass the solar light and to reflect light emitted by the luminescent material. Further, a method for concentrating solar light is provided. The method comprises the steps of (a) passing incident solar light through a wavelength-selective filter and an energy concentrating area onto a luminescent material, and (b) converting the incident solar light in the luminescent material to light having a wavelength reflectable by the wavelength-selective filter. The method further comprises a step (c) of concentrating the converted light in a pre-determined area arranged between the wavelength-selective filter and the luminescent material.

    • A display (1) comprises a display device (2), such as an LC cell and a switchable transfiector (7). The transflector 7 comprises a plurality of discrete portions and is configured so that the transmittance and reflectance properties of at least one of said portions can be tuned independently of other portions. Where the transflector is a suspended particle device (SPD), the portions may comprise individual particle suspensions (8a, 8b, 8c) and/or regions within a cell containing a particle suspension (8a, 8b, 8c). In normal operation, images etc. are displayed using the display device (2). In some embodiments, the transflector (7) may be used in the provision of illumination for the display device (2) using backlighting 9 from light source (3) and/or reflected ambient light (10), in dependence on the light level detected by a light sensor (22). The transflector 7 may be used to display images (23) or text, such as touch screen keys (24) while the display (1) is in standby mode and the display device (2) is switched off.

    • The present invention relates to a lighting device wherein an in-coupled light flow is at least partly constrained within a light-guide plate (4) by means of total internal reflection. The device includes means for achieving a selective local light output from the output surface (6) of the light-guide plate, such that the intensity of the emitted light flow from the light guide can be locally controlled over its output surface area. This is achieved by a number of closed cells adjoining the output surface. Each cell contains a liquid element (11) , the form of which may be manipulated by electrowetting, such that the liquid can be brought to a greater or lesser extent into optical contact or out of optical contact with a local area of the output surface (6) , thereby varying the intensity of the locally out-coupled light flow therethrough . The cell may be built up by the light-guide plate (4) , a support plate (8) and lateral wall parts (9,10) . The support plate (8) may consist of a hydrophobized glass plate, which is positioned parallel to the light-guide plate (4) .
