    • The invention relates to a drive system for dental handpieces in which measures are taken in a simple manner to ensure that electrical safety requirements are met so as to make the handpiece safer for patients and health-care staff. The drive system comprises a rotor (12) fixed on a rotating shaft (11), at least one anti-friction bearing system (13, 14) for mounting the rotating shaft (11), which bearing system consists of an inner bearing race (17), an outer bearing race (18) and several rolling elements (19) positioned between the bearing races (17, 18). The drive system also has a coupling element (16) for connecting a dental instrument (1) to be driven. According to the invention the rolling elements (19) of the anti-friction bearing system(s) (13, 14) consist of a non-electroconductive material so that an electrical insulation is ensured between the stator or the motor housing (10) and the rotor (12) of the drive motor. In case of a drive motor defect this prevents an electric current from flowing through the anti-friction bearings (13, 14) and the housing (10) of the drive motor to the patient or health-care staff. Steel anti-friction bearing systems with ceramic rolling elements (so-called hybrid anti-friction bearings) or fully ceramic anti-friction bearing systems are advantageously used to mount the rotating shaft (11) of the drive system.
