    • A boot (20) is disclosed for use with a snowboard (22) having binding means for attachment to the boot. The boot includes a base (24), a highback (26), and an upper (28). The base includes a binding receiving plate (58) for attaching the boot to the binding means (64, 66) on the snowboard. The base also has toe and heel ends. The base (24) is formed with a toecap (30) at the toe end and a heel counter (32) at the heel end. Treat (34) projects from the bottom of the base for traction when the boot is not attached to the snowboard. The highback (26) extends upwardly from the heel counter (32) of the base. The high back provides aft support to the user. The upper (28) is fixedly attached to the base and is arranged and configured to receive the foot and ankle of the user. The upper has a rearward side adjacent the highback. The upper is more flexible than the base and the highback. A base strap (72) is connected to opposing sides of the base and extends across a portion of the upper.

    • An in-line roller skate including a frame (14), a plurality of wheels (12), a plurality of frame plugs (16, 18), a plurality of axles (22), and means for securing the axles (24) is disclosed. The frame has a first rail and a second rail, the first and second rails having a plurality of coaxial frame apertures (20). At least two of the frame apertures have at least three sides. Each of the plurality of wheels has bearings (56) with inner races (58) and outer races. The frame plugs have lugs (44) with a shape that nonrotatably engages within the frame apertures. The plugs also have eccentric plug apertures (48, 50) extending through them such that each plug has at least three positions of engagement with the frame apertures. This arrangement provides the plug apertures with at least three different possible locations relative to said frame in which to be positioned. This construction of the axle assemblies (10), as described, allows ease of assembly of the skate wheels into a multitude of configurations (61-66). The present disclosure also covers methods of installing wheels on an in-line roller skate into various rockering and horizontal configurations.

    • An in-line roller skate (21) incorporating a soft, breatheable upper (22) and exoskeletal support structure is disclosed. The skate includes multiple in-line wheels (35) secured to a frame (31). The frame is attached to a base (39). In one disclosed embodiment the frame is integrally molded with the base. In another embodiment, the frame is adjustably attached and may be moved both laterally and longitudinally with respect to the base. A hook-and-peg (237, 238) alignment means for accurately securing the frame to the base is also provided. A toecap (24) and heel counter (41) project upwardly from the base and help support the upper. A cuff (23) is pivotally attached to the heel counter and includes a strap (228) for tightening the cuff around the leg of the skater. A speed control device (33) is also disclosed that includes a friction plate (61) to contact the wheels in response to movement of a lever (59).

    • A frame for securing in-line skate wheels to a skate boot includes mounting platforms, right and left walls, and cross braces between the walls. The mounting platforms are adapted for securing a skate boot to the frame. The right and left walls extend downwardly from the mounting platform and include lower regions having apertures for securing the wheels thereto. The apertures of the walls are substantially aligned.     • A skate (10) includes a boot (12) and wheels (28), secured to a frame (14), and a brake (16). The boot includes a base (18), a heel counter (20) and a pivotable cuff (22). The brake includes a brake housing (32) connected to the frame by lower arms (34) and to the base of the boot by upper arms (36). A brake pad (38) is secured to the lower end of the brake housing adjacent the wheels. A push rod (40) extends upwardly from a top end of the brake housing along the axis of the brake housing, and bears against a cuff tab (42) secured to the back of the cuff of the boot. Forward pivoting of the cuff of the boot during skating does not activate the brake, while rearward movement of the cuff causes the cuff tab to push down on the push rod (40), resulting in engagement of the brake pad with the ground. Displacement of the brake pad in response to movement of the cuff is amplified by a hydraulic master-slave piston arrangement contained within the brake housing. The master-slave piston arrangement includes a master piston (52) and master diaphragm (56) housed within a master cylinder (54), a slave cylinder (70) positioned below the master cylinder, and a slave diaphragm (74) and slave piston (78).

    • A boot and binding allows step-in attachement to a snowboard while supporting the ankle of the user and allowing desired flexibility. The sole includes binding-receiving elements for attaching the boot to the binding on the snowboard. The sole also has toe and heel ends. The sole is formed with a heel counter at the heel end. Tread projects from the sole for traction when the boot is not attached to the snowboard. The strut extends upwardly from the heel counter of the base. The strut provides aft support to the wearer. The upper is fixedly attached to the sole and is arranged and configured to receive the foot and ankle of the user. The upper has a rearward side adjacent the strut. The upper is more flexible than the strut and the highback. The binding disclosed includes a plate for attachment to the snwoboard, a first coupling member to secure the forward end of the boot, and a second coupling member to secure the rearward end of the boot. The coupling members are releasably secured to the boot with at least one arm that extends from the side of the plate. The coupling member that secures the forward end of the boot may include either a set of jaws, a simple hook, or ridges on the sides of the toe portion.

    • A method of constructing a ski, snowboard, or the like having a base, a core, and a top is disclosed. The method includes the steps of providing an insert plate, placing the insert plate between the base and the top, substantially surrounding the insert plate with the core, and joining the base and the top to the core. Bindings may be secured to the insert plate by fastening them thereto. The insert plate includes a substantially flat portion and a plurality of threaded inserts extending upwardly therefrom. The inserts are integrally formed with the flat portion by being stamped from a metal plate that forms the flat portion. Apertures are also formed in the metal plate such that frame arms extend between the individual inserts to support the inserts and hold them with respect to one another. The insert plate is placed between the base and the top in a position relative to the base and the top in a position relative to the base and the top for optimum securing bindings thereto. The finished snowboard made according to the method is also disclosed.

The snow ski includes an outer layer (24), a core (22), a structural layer (28), a base (26), and edges (30). The core has upper and lower surfaces and two lateral sides. The structural layer is joined to the outer layer and is made of a thermoplastic material having multidirectional, high-modulus reinforcing fibers embedded within the thermoplastic. The thermoplastic material (28) is disposed across the upper surface and along the lateral sides of the core (22) and joins the outer layer to the core. The base (26) has a bottom sliding surface for contact with the snow, lateral sides, a top surface. The top surface of the base is joined to the core and includes a resin-impregnated fiber material (32) for structural rigidity. The edges extend longitudinally along the lateral sides of the base. The disclosure also includes a method of manufacturing the ski by joining a thermoplastic composite layer to an outer layer, molding the joined layers into a top cap, placing the top cap and a base within a jig, and injecting foam between the base and top cap.
