    • An apparatus for measuring the rate of flow of a fluid such as for measuring the quantities of intake air of internal combustion engines. The apparatus includes a first conductive film and a second conductive film applied to a substrate and which are in thermal contact with one another and are introduced into the flowing medium. The apparatus includes a resistance-measuring arrangement connected to a control function to form a closed loop. The resistance value of the first film is sensed by the resistance-measuring arrangement and, by applying energy, the control function regulates the first film to a temperature dependent on at least the quantity of air flowing past. This apparatus further provides that the output quantity of the control function is applied to the second conductive film, that both conductive films have at least approximately the same sheet resistance, and that their geometry is adapted to each other so that the second film is controlled to at least approximately the temperature of the first film.

    • In order to provide immunity against vibrations, a pressure sensor for detecting the prevailing manifold suction pressure in an internal combustion engine, for example, has a movable chamber which responds to the varying pressure and thereby changes the distance between a diffuse reflector and an optical detector assembly. The detector assembly includes a light source, a first light-sensitive detector and a second light-sensitive detector. The second detector is connected to a regulator which so controls the electrical power to the light source that the induced photo current in the second detector remains substantially constant independently of the distance between the reflector and the detectors. A number of embodiments is presented.

    • The invention is directed to an arrangement for determining the mass rate of flow of a flowing medium, especially the mass rate of flow of air required in the combustion process of an internal combustion engine. The arrangement of the invention includes at least two temperature-dependent resistors which are placed directly in the flowing medium. The arrangement further includes two actively operated bridge connected to respective operational amplifiers. By means of a simple arithmetic coupling of the values of both bridge currents, an output signal is obtained which uniquely serves as an indication of the mass rate of flow and is independent of the temperature of the flowing medium. The condition that the two temperature-dependent resistors are operated at constant temperature independently of the temperature of the flowing medium permits further improvements to be realized. More specifically, the two temperature-dependent resistors can be configured as film resistors on a massive substrate without any loss in the speed of response. By utilizing two temperature-dependent resistors in a single bridge, an improved sensitivity of the arrangement can be obtained and an indication of the direction of flow of the medium can be achieved.

    • An apparatus is proposed for measuring the mass of a fluid medium such as the mass of air induced by internal combustion engines which has at least one temperature-dependent measuring resistor film disposed in the flow of the medium, whose temperature and/or resistance is regulated in accordance with the mass of the medium and wherein the manipulated variable is a measure for the mass of the medium. The temperature-dependent measuring resistor film is disposed on a carrier separated therefrom by an insulating film and a temperature-dependent heating resistor film. The temperature of the heating resistor film is regulated to approximately the same temperature as the temperature-dependent measuring resistor film so that a heat flow between the temperature-dependent measuring resistor and the carrier is prevented. As a result, the response speed of the apparatus to changes in the flow rate of the medium is substantially improved as is the precision of measurement.

    • The invention relates to pressure differential indicating apparatus in a hydraulic measuring bridge which includes a measuring chamber that is provided with a valve means that emits a throughflow quantity into the chamber to be measured thereby and a further valve element for discharging the throughflow quantity from said chamber. The measuring chamber is associated with a pressure differential sensor having a movable wall which controls the volume of the measuring chamber and is acted upon by the pressure of a measuring medium that pulsates at slightly different pressures. Further, the pressure differential sensor is provided with a signal transmitter for controlling the measuring chamber volume and includes a cylinder having a wall provided with a piston means associated with a piston rod. The piston rod has one free end thereof arranged to cooperate with the signal transmitter and the piston means further includes a sealing means having an extent which cooperates with the cylinder wall to form an annular seal therebetween.

With an identical flow quantity but different temperatures in the medium, a correct measurement indication is obtained by making the excess temperature of the hot wire dependent on the temperature of the medium to be measured.
