    • A handheld biopsy device is provided for the collection of soft tissue samples from a surgical patient. In a preferred embodiment, the biopsy device comprises a handpiece, a fluid collection system, and a power transmission source. The handpiece is configured for grasping by a single hand, and being independently manipulatable by hand for movement of the instrument toward and away from the patient. An elongated piercer extends from the distal end of the handpiece. The piercer has a sharpened distal end for entering the tissue and a port located proximal to the sharpened distal end for receiving a portion of tissue mass. An elongated cutter is disposed coaxially relative to a piercer lumen of the piercer. A distal blade of the cutter slides distally past the port of the piercer to severe the tissue portion drawn into the port by vacuum. The cutter is retracted to a most proximal position for removal of the tissue portion from a cutter lumen of the cutter. The handpiece further comprises a holster for detachably connecting a cutter rotation transmission and a cutter axial transmission to the power transmission source.

    • A surgical biopsy system is provided for removing at least one tissue sample from a surgical patient. The surgical biopsy system comprises an elongated, hollow piercer and a cutter rotatably and axially positionable relative to the piercer. The piercer has a lateral port for receiving the tissue sample into the piercer. The surgical biopsy system further comprises a power transmission source operatively connected to the cutter for rotating and translating the cutter, a control unit, and a display mounted in a display frame for showing an operator a plurality of operational modes of the surgical biopsy system. The surgical biopsy system further comprises at least one control button operatively connected to the control unit by a circuit and remotely located from the control unit. The operator may actuate the control button(s) to select any one of the operational modes and the selected operational mode is visually identifiable on the display.

    • An applicator for use in applying labels adhered to a release liner, the labels being in the form of a roll. The applicator comprises a body having a trigger and a roll holder for supporting the rolled release liner, an indexer for positioning label formats of varying pitch in the applicator and stripping labels from the release liner, an applicator assembly for applying the labels which were positioned by the indexer, and a friction drive responsive to the trigger for advancing the release liner through the applicator assembly. The friction drive includes a self-adjusting tensioner which includes a drive slip which allows the drive to slip when the label is correctly positioned by the indexer in the applicator. The drive slip includes a slip means for allowing the drive to slip when the label is correctly positioned, enabling the largest pitch label to be completely stripped from the release liner. A quick release allows tension from the friction drive to be released by removing the thrust roller from frictional contact with the friction drive roller is also provided. The indexer includes a slipping actuator to correctly position label formats of varying pitch by causing the friction drive to slip once the label is correctly positioned in the applicator. The applicator includes a label holder which holds the label after the label is completely stripped from the release liner, the label holder is positioned so the label protrudes from the body. The label holder includes two concave channels which hold the label.
