    • File system write filters are provided which can selectively permit or prevent data from being written-protected storage media. The write filter utilized volatile cache memory to store data that is requested to be written to storage media by applications programming interface function calls. In one aspect, if the particular data is requested to be written to a file that is a file identified on the file exclusion list, the data can be written to the file in non-volatile storage. Otherwise, the particular data is written to volatile cache memory. In another aspect, the write filters can be utilized on computing devices to create a stateless computing device wherein data is written to volatile cache memory in response to write function calls. Upon rebooting, any data that was saved to the volatile cache memory is discarded and the computing device is restored to its original state.

    • The described systems and methods are directed at configuring a server based on a selected role. An installation application is configured to install core components in a server where these core components enable the server to perform the basic functions of a network computing device. A role management application is configured to enable a system administrator to select a role for the server and to automatically determine software components associated with the selected role. The role management application is then configured to build the software components and install the components on the server. The role management application is further configured to configure the components for the selected role. The automated installation process performed by the role management application enables a server to be efficiently configured for a particular role without installing other unnecessary components unrelated to the role.

    • The management of applications in a computing environment often involves a significant number of computing operations, such as acquiring the application, deploying data objects in various locations, and configuring the application with respect to the deployed device. Conventional computing environments may provide inadequate support throughout a typical application life cycle, especially for a computing environment distributed across many devices. Instead, the computing environment may be represented in a deployable object hierarchy that may be distributed to various devices. An application management service may therefore be provided to install representations of the application in the object hierarchy, and to support many other aspects of the application life cycle, such as application discovery, sharing, updating, and removal. The devices may therefore provide the applications of the computing environment to the user in a consistent manner with reduced manual management among the devices comprising the computing mesh.
