    • A system and a method for a first node in a communications network to authenticate a second node. The second node is connected by a communications link to a port of the first node. The method comprises setting a status that the second node is regarded as untrusted by the first node, so that the first node discards selected network management messages received over the communications link from the second node while it is regarded as untrusted. The method further comprises performing an authentication protocol with the second node by receiving at least one message from the second node over the communications link. Such message is discarded if it does not form part of the authentication protocol. The first node then treats the second node as trusted if the authentication protocol is successful, so that the selected network management messages received from the second node are no longer discarded.

    • An apparatus for use in the storage and transportation of recyclable waste comprises a housing (10) having a bottom (16) for standing on the ground, a rear wall (20), a pair of opposed side walls (22), a handle (26) adjacent the top and rear of the housing, and a pair of wheels (28) adjacent the bottom and rear of the housing and arranged such that the housing can be tipped rearwardly using the handle so that the wheels engage the ground, so that the bottom of the housing no longer engages the ground and so that the apparatus can be moved on the wheels using the handle to move it. The housing provides at least one space (48) accessible from the front of the housing, the or each space being arranged to receive at least one recycling box (12) having a base (30), four side walls (32) and an open top. The apparatus has a platform, runners or the like (14,52,64,86) for supporting the or each recycling box in its space such that the or each recycling box can be slid into the housing from the front and such that when the or each recycling box is in the housing the front-facing side wall(s) of the recycling box(es) substantially close(s) the front of the housing and the recycling boxes are covered. Existing recycling boxes can be used. When the recycling box(es) are slid into the housing, their contents are protected from the elements, and they can be moved by a householder on collection day without any need for lifting.

    • A portable vehicle wash system for use during pre-wash and post-wash procedures preferably includes a portable and collapsible free-standing frame capable of may be positioned over an existing vehicle. Such a free-standing frame preferably includes first and second support sections. Each of the first and second support section preferably includes a fluid discharge section, and a plurality of legs integrally formed with the fluid discharge section. Notably, the fluid discharge section of the first support section is isolated from the fluid discharge section of the second support section. A hose is also provided in fluid communication with the free-standing frame. In this manner, the hose may be coupled to an existing water supply source such that water is simultaneously channeled through the free-standing frame and simultaneously dispersed out from the fluid discharge section of each of the first and second support sections.

    • An audio/visual (A/V) system utilizes a software architecture partitioned between application specific code and common processing code. For example, in an audio context, decoder code represents an embodiment of application specific code and post-processing operations such as bass control, tone control, volume control, and mute represent common processing code. The A/V system also utilizes a RISC processor to control communication between a digital signal processor (DSP) and peripheral devices. A/V system 300 uses a first-in-first-out (FIFO) memory buffer to store communications between the RISC processor and DSP. The FIFO is preferably sufficiently large to allow the RISC processor and DSP to operate at their own respective paces. A/V system 300 also utilizes a standard command word and a manager for each DSP application that allows the RISC and DSP to easily exchange information.
