    • A multipurpose woodworking tool of the type having a frame, a pair of parallel way tubes extending longitudinally of the frame, and a headstock mounted on the way tubes in which the improvement comprises a pair of yokes joining the way tubes together at ends thereof, pairs of upright members at the ends of the frame and spaced apart to receive one of the yokes therebetween, and an apparatus extending between the yokes and the upright members which enables the way tubes to be changed in elevation between a lower elevation optimal for utilizing a table saw attachment mounted on the way tubes and a higher elevation optimal for utilizing a lathe attachment. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes spring-loaded pins which are sidewardly displaceable from the yokes, and holes positioned at at least two elevations on the upright members to be engaged by the pins. In another embodiment the apparatus is in the form of a pair of rods which are inserted through pairs of holes formed in the support legs and upright members at the desired elevations. In a third embodiment, the apparatus includes a pair of pins fixed to the support legs and positioned to slide in a vertical direction in slots formed in the upright members. Lever arms having notches corresponding to the desired elevations are positioned in the upright members to be engaged by and to support the pins. In each embodiment, the yokes can be disengaged from their respective members so that the way tubes may be pivoted to a vertical position.

    • A workpiece support system for a power tool, preferably a multipurpose woodworking tool of the type having a frame, a main table mounted on the frame, and a power-driven tool member associated with the main table. The support system comprises a first pair of tubular rails attached to longitudinal sides of the main table, a pair of extension rods telescoping within the rails, an auxiliary table having a second pair of rails attached thereto which telescope over and are supported by the protruding portions of the rods. The support system includes capstan screws for releasably locking the extension rods to the pairs of rails. The system may include at least one secondary table mounted on the frame and having a third pair of rails telescoping over ends of the protruding portions and including similar locking means. Another embodiment includes a side frame for supporting long workpieces. The combination of the main table, auxiliary table and secondary table provides a rigid, level and adjustable workpiece supporting surface.

    • A combined tensioning and tracking assembly is provided for use with band saw tools. A continuous saw band is supported by three spaced-apart pulleys. A bar, supporting one of the pulleys, is mounted for sliding and tilting movement, with the sliding movement providing adjustment in the tension of the saw band, and the tilting movement providing adjustment in the "tracking" of the saw band. The sliding movement of the bar is accomplished through an overcenter arrangement which tensions and releases the saw band. The bar, over center arrangement, and structure for achieving sliding and tilting movement of the bar, are all attached to a bracket which is mounted on the frame of the band saw tool.

    • A scroll saw has a base including integral walls forming a gear casing, a frame assembly mounted on the base, and lower and upper oscillating arm members pivotally mounted on the frame assembly. The gear casing houses gear and counterweight assemblies for driving and counterbalancing the oscillating motion of the lower and upper arm members. A saw blade is removably mounted between corresponding free ends of the lower and upper reciprocating arm members. The ends of the saw blade are prepositioned between a pair of blade holders, and the entire assembly of blade and blade holders is then attached as a unit to the free ends of the arm members. Blade tension is adjusted by means of a tensioning system that indexes blade tension to rotation of a tension knob. The saw further includes a nonflexible tube which functions as a combination airblaster and blade guard for directing an air stream into a cutting area to remove sawdust and other debris while preventing accidental contact with the saw blade.

    • A saw guard system adapted to be mounted on the headstock quill of a multipurpose woodworking tool includes a rear portion adapted to be clamped to the headstock quill, a front portion which forms a pocket with the rear portion and is adjustable so that the pocket size can be varied to accommodate rotary tools of varying thicknesses, and an exhaust port communicating with the pocket and having an outer end adapted to be attached to a vacuum hose. The rear portion supports a riving knife adapted to extend above an associated saw table and which includes an upper saw guard. The riving knife is positioned in a common plane with a rotary tool mounted on the quill, and is capable of remaining closely adjacent to the rotary tool regardless of table position or quill extension. An anti-kickback device includes a finger having a downwardly-extending point and is connected to the riving knife by a pair of link arms so that the horizontal orientation of the finger remains constant regardless of its elevation relative to the riving knife. To facilitate retention of dust in the pocket, as well as its removal through the port, the front portion includes a transverse channel at its lower end communicating with the port, the rear portion includes a deflector plate above the port, and the port is skewed relative to the front portion and is located at a downstream side of the pocket.

The table assembly includes a table top, a pivot mounted beneath the table top, a pair of support legs having racks on opposite sides thereof and attached to the pivot, and a carriage, mounted on the way tubes, having channels to receive the support legs. A pair of pinion gears are positioned within the channels to mesh with the racks and are driven by a crank having a locking mechanism so that the table can be displaced relative to the carriage. The table top can be pivoted to a position so that it is perpendicular to and faces an axis of the output spindle in a drill press mode, or the support legs can be removed from the channels in the carriage, and the table and support legs reversed in position relative to the carriage so that the table faces away from the spindle in an under-the-table shaper mode.

    • A duplicating system, especially for use with a multipurpose woodworking machine capable of performing lathe turning operations. The system includes a support table, a carriage adapted to be slidably mounted on the machine, and a locking rack and pinion for raising and lowering the table relative to the carriage. A tool support is positioned on the table and includes a base having a low friction pad for engaging the table top, a follower for contacting a pattern, and a multi-edge cutting tool rotatably mounted on a tool rod for engaging a workpiece. An insert guide is mounted on the tool rod to hold the cutting tool in position. The base has a set screw which engages a circumferential groove in the shank of the tool rod so that the cutting tool can be quickly and accurately positioned relative to the follower. The system also includes a pattern support frame which includes a channel, a pair of stanchions for attaching the channel to the machine above the workpiece, and a pair of brackets which are slidably adjustable along the channel and include clamps for engaging a flat template and spindles for engaging a three-dimensional model. The clamp is adapted to hold a template either parallel to or perpendicular to the axis of the workpiece for spindle or face plate turning, respectively. The channel also supports an adjustable chip shield.
