    • The present invention is directed to a defibrillator having both a manual and an AED mode with corresponding user commands for both modes. The defibrillator includes a door which conceals manual mode commands, such that opening of the door puts the defibrillator in the manual mode and simultaneously reveals the manual mode command buttons. In one actual embodiment, the door includes apertures which allow access to the AED command buttons. When the door is in the open position, a keypad is revealed having manual commands which preferably take the form of buttons. In another actual embodiment, the door includes a switch which senses when the door is opened and sends the defibrillator into manual mode. The door includes a front side having AED command buttons, and a back side having manual mode command buttons. The door conceals a keypad having further manual mode command buttons.

    • A battery (10) contains a base portion (12) that is shaped generally rectangular parallelpiped. The bottom face (18) of the base portion (12) contains a raised notch portion (22) at the first end (14) of the base portion directly beneath an upper ledge (20) that extends along the perimeter of the first end.     • An environmentally protected medical electronic instrument, such as a defibrillator. The defibrillator electronics are housed in an integrally formed rectangular container having an open top. Electronic components, particularly electronic components which cannot be readily shielded from environmental hazards, are accessible at the top of the container. These components are protected by a lid that is pivotally mounted on the container. Environmentally protected user interface components, such as an LCD display, key pad and audio transducer, are mounted on the upper surface of the lid so that they are readily accessible to the user.

    • A medical electronic device having an electronic circuit allows for additional functional modules having electrical components to electrically couple to the medical electronic circuit. The modular system includes a housing enclosing the medical electronic circuit and a module enclosing the electrical components containing the additional functionality. A socket for releasably receiving the module is formed in a top side of the housing and is defined by a bottom wall and a side wall of the housing. The side wall has a rib projecting therefrom and extending from the bottom wall toward the top of the housing. The bottom wall has first and second holes formed therein proximate to the first rib. The module includes front and rear sides each having a channel formed therein for receiving the rib. A pair of guide pins extend below the bottom of the case, on opposing sides of an electrical connector. When the module is inserted into the socket, the channels receive the rib, the pair of pins are received by the pair of holes and the electrical connector on the case electrically couples with an electrical connector extending upward from the bottom wall of the socket.
