    • A circulating (kill) valve for hot, high pressure wells includes a valve assembly to be positioned in an open-ended tubular-shaped side-pocket housing of a mandrel connected into a well tubing string. The valve assembly includes an open-ended cylindrical valve body provided with an interior sealing seat and spaced-apart side openings. A valve element is arranged within the valve body and is urged by unbalanced pressures to the open or closed position depending on the direction of the pressure imbalance. In the closed position a sealing surface on the exterior of the valve element engages and seals with the lower interior sealing seat of the valve body. A ported access to the inner well string pressure permits that pressure to urge the valve element to the closed position. Such pressure may be overcome by pressure imbalance when fluid pressure exterior of the tubing string forces the valve element upwardly from its seat. A wiper seal is arranged on the interior of the valve body and engages the outer surface of the valve element. A ported access to inner tube pressure urges the valve element to the closed position which may be overcome by pressure imbalance when exterior pressure forces the valve element from its seat.

    • A latching device for locking and removal of a flow control device from a mandrel receiver comprises a cylindrical stem, a locking sleeve slidably mounted upon the stem, an annular locking ring mounted for a limited axial movement along the lower portion of the locking sleeve and a compression spring. The annular locking ring has upper and lower bevel surfaces which are complementary to bevel surfaces of a mandrel receiver. An improved retrieval device is disclosed for retrieval of a valve which is locked within the mandrel receiver, the device comprising a cylindrical body having a central opening and an internal wall with a recess and a retrieval tool provided with a compressible C-shaped ring for locking engagement with the recess formed in the cylindrical body, thereby allowing retrieval of the cylindrical body, along with the well tool which is securedly attached to the retrieval device.

    • A sealing assembly is clampable to the end of a threaded male pipe section. The assembly includes an aperture which guides a drill bit radially inwards to establish a radial blind bore in the outer surface of the pipe section into the threads thereof. A cylinder is slidably positionable over the aperture and carries an elongate strip of resilient sealing material slidably disposed in a transverse slot therethrough and a slidable cylindrical punch shaft coaxially aligned with the cylinder. Radially inward movement of the shaft punches out a cylindrical sealing plug from the strip. The plug is forced by continued inward movement of the shaft along a cylindrical aperture in the cylinder which receives the shaft and is in coaxial alignment therewith until the plug is press-fit into the radial blind bore. Upon make up of a pipe joint comprising the male section having the thus installed plug and a female section, the internal threads of the female section cut through the outer surface of the sealing plug thereby effecting a fluid-tight seal between the threads of the respective sections, thereby preventing helical fluid leakage in the space formed between the mating threads of each section.

    • The combination of a mandrel and multiple flow control valves for use in a well tubing in which the mandrel includes a sidepocket and a locking shoulder aligned with the pocket. A plurality of vertically connected flow control valves, such as gas lift valves, each having an inlet and an outlet are adapted to be positioned in the pocket by a single latch connected to the valves for engaging the locking shoulder. The pocket has a vertical length sufficient for receiving the valves, a plurality of vertically spaced openings extending between the interior of the pocket and the outside of the mandrel, one of the openings being positioned adjacent each of the inlets of the valves when the valves are installed, and a plurality of passageways extending between the interior of the pocket and the interior of the mandrel with one of the passageways being positioned to communicate with each of the outlets of said valves when the valves are installed. In one embodiment, each passageway is positioned below one of the openings and the pocket includes a sealing surface on each side of each vertically spaced opening for coacting with a seal on the valves for isolating the valves from each other. In another embodiment the number of openings is two and includes a sealing surface in the pocket above and below the two openings, and the number of passageways is two and one is positioned above the upper sealing surface and the other is positioned below the lower sealing surface. The valves may be gas lift valves having a pressure charged bellows acting against a valve element in a direction to close the valve, and the bellows of both of said valves may be charged from a single pressure chamber.

    • A protector for preventing tools from becoming engaged between an internally-mounted deflector guide and the inside of the body of a side-pocket mandrel. The protector includes a protrusion connected to the body adjacent to and above the deflector guide which extends into the interior of the body for blocking the space between the deflector guide and the body thereby preventing well tools from becoming stuck. The protrusion may include one or more arcuate members plug welded into the body. In addition, the protrusion may be made intergal with or connected to the upper end of the deflector guide. Preferably, at least the outer and upper edges of the protrusion are beveled outwardly towards the inside of the mandrel body for eliminating engaging shoulders. In other form, the protrusion may be formed of indentations made in the wall of the body.

    • A bellows construction is provided which defines multiple convolutions along the length thereof and having the ends of the bellows connected to respective fixed and moveable components by means of high temperature solder or weld metal. To protect the bellows against damage by overpressure, back-up rings are positioned in each of the inwardly and outwardly facing convolutions of the bellows structure. Back-up rings in the heat affected zones at the end portions of the bellows are composed of metal so that they will not become deteriorated by application of heat. Internal back-up rings in the central, non-heat affected zone of the bellows may be composed of a polymer material. All of the back-up rings of the externally facing convolutions of the bellows may be composed of polymer materials since they can be assembled within the respective convolutions. After the soldering or welding operations have been completed. Also, if desired, all of the back-up rings of the inwardly facing convolutions of the bellows may be composed of metal to provide positive assurance against any possibility of back-up ring degradation due to application of heat during soldering or welding operations.

    • In accordance with an illustrative embodiment of the present invention, a system for separate injection of a plurality of chemicals into the production string of a well at substantially the same depth or level includes upper and lower side pocket mandrels having pressure responsive control valves seated in their respective side pockets, a first chemical supply conduit extending from the top of the well to the side pocket of said upper mandrel and then continuing to and through said lower mandrel to an injection point adjacent the lower end of the side pocket in said lower mandrel, and a second chemical supply conduit leading from the top of the well to and through said upper mandrel and then to the side pocket of said lower mandrel, whereby chemicals supplied under pressure to said conduits can flow past said control valves and be injected into the tubing in a manner to treat substantially the entire length thereof above said injection point.

    • A combined well casing spider and elevator has a body defining a bowl inner wall tapered to reduced diameter from the top to bottom end and defining first external guide surfaces being inclined upwardly and outwardly and having a kicker element defining a second coextensive external guide surface being inclined upwardly and outwardly to a greater extent than the first external guide surface. A gate member is pivoted to the body for movement of a well casing to and from the bowl. A circumferential array of casing gripping slips is located within the bowl and form a circular hole to receive a well casing. The slips are vertically movable along the bowl inner wall to effect radial enlargement and contraction of the circular hole to release and grip the casing. A slip actuating mechanism is provided having a cross-rod extending across the body and having end portions received within journal bushings fixed within the body and also having crank arms fixed to the cross-rod and lift arms being moved by the lift arms for raising and lowering the slips. Wear resistant polymer guide pads of the lift arms have guiding engagement with the first and second external guide surfaces of the body during upward movement of the lift arms to cause first and second segments of upward spreading movement of the lift arms and the slips during upward lift arm movement to cause first and second segments of upward and radially spreading movement of the slips. The cross-rod incorporates positioning shoulders and jamb nuts which ensure maintenance of proper adjustment of the crank arms relative to the cross-rod. A wear resistant latch mechanism is also provided for latching and releasing the slips.
