    • An emergency call-based security algorithm negotiation method and apparatus are disclosed. The method comprises the following steps: after receiving an attachment request from a User Equipment (UE) and determining that the attachment request is an emergency attachment request, a network side sets UE security capabilities to support a null algorithm only; or, the network side determines that the UE security capabilities included in the attachment request support the null algorithm only; performing Non-Access Stratum (NAS) and Access Stratum (AS) selection processing taking the null algorithm as a security algorithm for the user equipment. A mobility management entity (MME) and an evolved Node-B (eNB) can perform security negotiation directly on the basis that the user equipment only supports the null algorithm when the NAS and NA security negotiation is performed, so that the access efficiency and the call completing rate of emergency calls are improved.

    • A portable data collection device having an imaging based dataform reader utilizing a binarization process to identify an imaged dataform or signature area with a target image area. An imaging assembly is provided that includes a board camera having black and white circuitry and generates a composite video signal representing an image of a target area of the imaging assembly when actuated. The imaging assembly includes a two dimensional photosensor array. The imaging assembly is selectively actuatable with a first trigger for reading a target dataform in the imaging assembly's target area and actuatable with a second trigger for capturing a image of the target object in the target area. When the device is operated in a dataform reading mode or in a signature area capture mode, binarization circuitry is provided that binarizes gray scale values generated from the composite video signal and examines the binary values to identify the imaged dataform or signature area. When operating in the signature area capture mode, the binarized data corresponding to the signature area is subject to data compression before being output. When operating in the dataform reading mode, the binarized data corresponding to the dataform are operated on by cell extraction circuitry and dataform decoding circuitry to decode the imaged dataform.

    • A portable data collection device providing for optical character recognition. A housing defines an internal region and includes a user handle that allows a user to position the housing relative to an indicia carrying target. An imaging assembly includes a two dimensional imaging array supported within the internal region of the housing. The imaging assembly includes a capture circuit that generates a video signal representative of an image of a target zone. An optics assembly supported by the housing focuses an image of the target area onto the photosensor array. A character recognition processing circuit receives the video signal and categorizes the indicia on the target into a set of predefined characters. The character recognition processing circuit includes a discriminator for identifying a text region of the target and identifying individual character regions within the text region and a categorizer for identifying a character from a set of possible characters for an individual character region. The categorizer performs one or more tests based on pixel data within the individual character region.
