    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thick-walled high-strength seamless steel pipe having excellent sour resistance.SOLUTION: The steel pipe is obtained by subjecting a raw steel pipe to quenching and tempering to regulate the treated steel pipe so as to have a yield strength exceeding 450 MPa and at least the outermost surface or innermost surface of the pipe so as to have Vickers hardness HV5, which can be measured at a load of 5 kgf (testing force, 49 N), of 250 HV5 or less. This regulation is accomplished by subjecting the steel pipe which has been quenched to working processing in which the surface layer of the steel pipe is ground by 0.3 mm or more in depth, in the thickness direction, from the surface. Alternatively, the regulation is attained by conducting the quenching in such a manner that the raw steel pipe is held in the air atmosphere at an elevated temperature not lower than the Ac3 transformation point for 120 seconds or longer and thereafter the steel pipe is water-cooled in a nucleate boiling state or is water-cooled first in a film boiling state and then in a nucleate boiling state. With such quenching, it is possible to obtain a steel pipe in which each surface layer has hardness reduced to the value of 250 HV5 or below and which has an M-shaped hardness distribution in which a position where the hardness is maximum is present at a position on the way to the center of the wall thickness from the surface, or to obtain a steel pipe that has a U-shaped or flat hardness distribution in which the hardness of the surface layers is highest but not higher than the value of 250 HV5. Thus, the obtained steel pipe has significantly improved sour resistance.
