    • A method and a device for operating an internal combustion engine to perform a lambda regulation without using a lambda sensor. Fuel is injected for combustion in a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. A first quantity of the internal combustion engine is ascertained, which allows a conclusion to be drawn about the behavior of an output quantity of the internal combustion engine, in particular of a torque. The method includes the following: a) a first fuel quantity to be injected is predefined; b) a first value of the first quantity is ascertained, which results from a fuel injection according to the first fuel quantity to be injected; c) the fuel quantity to be injected is modified from the first fuel quantity to be injected in relation to an air quantity to be supplied to the internal combustion engine (1); d) a second value of the first quantity, which results from the change in the fuel quantity to be injected, is ascertained; e) the first value of the first quantity is compared to the second value of the first quantity, and f) as a function of the comparison result, a value for an air/fuel mixture ratio for the first fuel quantity to be injected prevailing prior to the change in the fuel quantity to be injected is ascertained independently of a measured value of a sensor measuring the oxygen level in the exhaust gas.
