    • An electromechanical VVA system for controlling the poppet valves in the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine. The system varies valve lift, duration, and phasing in a dependent manner for one or more banks of engine valves. A rocker subassembly for each valve or valve pair is pivotably disposed on a control shaft between the camshaft and the roller finger follower. The control shaft may be displaced about a pivot axis outside the control shaft to change the angular relationship of the rocker subassembly to the camshaft, thus changing the valve opening, closing, and lift. A plurality of control shafts for controlling all valvetrains in an engine bank defines a control shaft assembly. The angular positions of the individual control shafts may be tuned to optimize the valve timing of each cylinder. The system is applicable to the intake and exhaust camshafts of diesel and gasoline engines.

    • A roller hydraulic valve lifter comprising a prior art lifter body assembly having a roller assembly at a first end for following a camshaft cam, an oil chamber connectable to an engine oil gallery, and a pushrod seat slidably disposed in an open second end and having a socket for engaging the end of a valve pushrod. A prior art hydraulic lash adjuster is disposed within the chamber. An adapter between the head of the lash adjuster and the pushrod seat transfers motion of the lash adjuster to the pushrod seat. An advantage of combining a lash adjuster with a lifter body assembly is that the lash adjuster has a passage in the head and the valve is inverted from the orientation of the original check valve. By inserting a pin through the pushrod socket, oil can be drained to permit measurement of dry length without requiring complete disassembly.

    • A thermally insulative building construction panel (10) is comprised of a first or top sheet (20) that is a rigid nail-anchoring material; a second sheet (22) comprised of aluminum foil firmly adhered to the top sheet (20); and, a third or bottom sheet (26) comprised of an insulation material comprising low density foam insulation. A plurality of spacer members (24) are sandwiched in fixed positions between the second sheet (22) and the third (bottom) sheet (26) for defining air channels (25) between the sheets and between the spacer members themselves to permit multi-dimensional air flow substantially throughout the panel. In a first example embodiment, plural discrete spacer members are arranged in a pattern such that, for the discrete spacer members arranged in any direction of alignment, an air channel extends perpendicular to the direction of alignment. In a second example embodiment, elongated plural spacer members are configured to permit multi-dimensional air flow substantially throughout the panel by having a surface thereof formed in a square wave shape with alternating crests and troughs which essentially repeat along a major dimension of the spacer member. In a third example embodiment, panels of either the first example embodiment or the second example embodiment have their first sheet formed with a smaller surface area than the third sheet to facilitate formation of an expansion gap between adjacent panels.

    • An improved hydraulic lash adjuster including a cup-shaped adjuster body, and a plunger assembly disposed within the adjuster body. The plunger assembly includes a stepped axial bore extending from a body inner end to a central oil passage opening onto a hemispherical pivot head. A check valve cartridge sub-assembly is disposed against the step, defining a low-pressure oil chamber in the axial bore. A lash adjustment spring is disposed against the cartridge sub-assembly in a high-pressure chamber formed between the sub-assembly and the adjuster body. The cartridge sub-assembly may be used in other hydraulic lash adjusters such as are incorporated in hydraulic valve lifters.

    • There is provided a loading device for applying a load to a composite structure during a non-destructive inspection. The loading device comprises a load indicator to indicate the load applied, which is preferably a normal load, and comprises a connector attached to the load indicator to connect the loading device to a surface of the structure. A support contacts the structure to support the load indicator and the connector. The support preferably comprises a plate and three legs, wherein the load indicator is attached to the plate and the legs contact the structure. The legs may comprise protective ends for contacting the structure and may define adjustable lengths. A load applicator in mechanical communication with the connector and the load indicator applies the load to the structure, advantageously by reducing the distance between the connector and load indicator to create the load. The connector may connect to the surface of the structure defining a protrusion or to a protrusion removably adhered to the surface of the structure.
