    • A token bucket instantiation regulate packets in a traffic flow stream based on a predetermined peak traffic flow rate. The token bucket size is nominally set to zero. An evaluation is made at a device that has received a given packet. The packet is considered conforming and is passed from the device if the token depth of the bucket is zero or greater. The token depth is decreased by the number of byes in the packet that was passed. The token depth is continuously replenished at a predetermined token rate until the predetermined bucket size is attained (the bucket is full). A received packet is deemed nonconforming if the token depth is less than zero; the non-conforming packet is not passed but is processed according to non-conforming criteria. Token bucket instantiations may be implemented in hardware, software or firmware for each traffic flow to regulate traffic to a given user.

    • A DOCSIS set-top gateway device uses multiple embedded cable modems so that one eCM can remained tuned to a frequency being used for a current two-way data session and another eCM can be used to tune to a different frequency. The other eCM that tunes to a different frequency is disabled from operating in the upstream direction to avoid conflict with the two-way eCM in communicating with a CMTS.The eCMs in the DSG are controlled by a client controller that interfaces applications local to the DSG to a central device, such as a CMTS. A message may be sent to a client application requesting content on a traffic flow using a different frequency than the two-way capable sCM. The client controller instructs the upstream-disabled eCM to tune to the different frequency, meanwhile the two-way eCM stays tuned to the current frequency.

    • A device, such as a cable modem or embedded media terminal adaptor that attempts to obtain unauthorized network services, is designated by head end equipment, such as a CMTS, as being a ‘rogue’ device. Upon an initial range request from the rogue device, the CMTS responds with a continuing range command. Upon receiving each periodic range request transmitted from the rogue device during a periodic station maintenance opportunity, the CMTS responds with another continuing range command. Thus, the rogue device does not ever establish connection with the CMTS because an ACK message is not received back from the CMTS. Moreover, use of CMTS resources for processing request from rogue devices is minimized because the rogue device does not reinitialize its MAC after a predetermined period of time, which it would do if a periodic ranging opportunity was not scheduled.

    • A subscriber login server is used for managing a subscriber login session. The login server is associated with a DHCP server for configuring a premise equipment device and operator-managed device. A subscriber login client at the premise equipment device securely communicates login username and password identifiers to the subscriber login server without using PPP technology. The login server retrieves matching identifiers from a RADIUS server and authorizes service with messages to the DHCP server and the CMTS.The login client can emulate a PPP login client so that a user's interface is similar to a PPPoE client. However, a layer-3 CMTS can be used instead of a layer-2 CMTS. In addition, subscriber authentication and accounting using RADIUS are preserved, positive network access control at the CMTS is maintained, and native IP traffic is routed or switched for maximum performance and QoS treatment.
