    • Service discovery for services on a wireless network is presented. It is determined (e.g., from a received Layer 2 message) that an offering apparatus h made a service available to entities joined to a wireless network. Then in a message, that is available to entities not joined to the network, is placed information about the services and also at least one of location information about the offering apparatus and link metric information about a network path to the offering apparatus. A discovering apparatus reads one or more transmitted messages (from different apparatuses in the same network in different networks), sees the service it wants is available through both, compares the different locations and/or the different link metrics, and based on the comparing chooses which network to join, or with which apparatus on the single network to create a peer link.

    • Various embodiments are disclosed relating to techniques for RTS/CTS usage in a wireless network. According to an example embodiment, a network performance may be measured within a wireless network. A variety of parameters may be measured at a wireless node to determine a network performance. In addition, it may be determined whether the network performance has reached a degraded performance threshold. A frame is transmitted via the wireless network. If the network performance has reached the degraded performance threshold, the frame may be transmitted using a Request-to-Send/Clear-to-Send (RTS/CTS) protection. In another example embodiment, a frame may be transmitted using RTS/CTS protection if an estimated transmission time for the frame exceeds a transmission time threshold.

    • A method, apparatus, and computer program for protecting transmissions are provided. A wireless communication apparatus receives a physical layer convergence protocol header of a transmission on a frequency band and determines from header information included in the header, whether or not there are further transmissions associated with the transmission and after the transmission on the frequency band. In response to determining on the basis of the header information that there will be at least one other transmission after the transmission on the frequency band, channel access of the wireless communication apparatus is suspended on the frequency band for a determined time period after the transmission, the determined time period including a transmission time interval of the at least one other transmission.

    • A method and system for defining a transmission of data within a transmission opportunity (TXOP) is described. Aspects of the present system and method are related to wireless local area network (WLAN) systems. In one embodiment, aspects of the present system may be utilized within a WLAN system operating in accordance with frame aggregation mechanisms. Other aspects of the system specify the role of access point (AP) and non-AP stations operating in a bidirectional single receiver aggregation procedure. Aspects of the described system and method provide control to an AP or other station to limit the duration of the response burst, including acknowledgement message, aggregated with one or more data frames. Other aspects indicate how bidirectional single receiver aggregate data flow should be used in infrastructure, mesh and ad hoc operation scenarios.
