    • An apparatus for coating a work piece includes a process chamber, a coating material supply apparatus located at least partially within the process chamber for delivering a coating material to the work piece, a pre-heater assembly adjoining the process chamber, and a support for holding the work piece. The pre-heater assembly includes a housing that opens to the process chamber, a susceptor comprising a ceramic material positioned at least partially within the housing, and a pre-heater electron gun configured to configured to direct an electron beam at the susceptor such that the susceptor radiates heat toward the work piece. The support is movable to selectively move the work piece between a first position within the housing of the pre-heater assembly and a second position within the process chamber and outside the housing of the pre-heater assembly.

    • In apparatus for shot peening, gravity is used to accelerate uniform sized steel shot, and thereby impart a combination of good surface finish and uniform compressive stresses to workpieces. It is especially useful for finishing gas turbine airfoils. Shot is introduced into the peening enclosure (28) through a gate (40) at near zero velocity. It is then accelerated along a streamline (31) toward the workpiece (18) with uniform velocity. The workpiece, positioned along the streamline, can be manipulated in three rotational modes: oscillatory rotation to uniformly peen contoured surfaces of a workpiece, periodic incremental rotation to peen different sides of a workpiece; and, tilting motion to enable peening of shoulders (22). The apparatus is especially suited to peening fragile workpieces such as gas turbine airfoils (18). A diverter plate (44) intercepts the shot stream at times when repositioning of a fragile workpiece is undertaken. Thus, possibly damaging impacts are avoided and steady state operation is able to be promptly resumed.

    • Disclosed is a two step process of peening for workpieces having small radii fillets or fragile edges, such as gas turbine airfoils have. In the first step, relatively small size shot of less than 1 mm dia is used to impart a first peening intensity to a workpiece. This results in a first relatively rough surface finish. In the second step, shot of substantially uniform diameter in the range 1-2.5 mm is impacted with uniform velocity to provide a surface finish smoother than 30AA (10.sup.-6 inch). When fillets are peened, improved fatigue life results from the duplex process. When used on edges, where direct edge impact is avoided in the second step, deformed edges are avoided by the process. Yet the workpiece is substantially smooth and the edges have the requisite residual stress distribution.

    • An apparatus deposits a coating on a part. The apparatus comprises a chamber and a sting assembly for carrying the part. The sting assembly is shiftable between: an inserted condition where the sting assembly holds the part within the chamber for coating; and a retracted condition where the sting assembly holds the part outside of the chamber. The apparatus comprises a source of the coating material positioned to communicate the coating material to the part in the inserted condition. The apparatus comprises a thermal hood comprising a first member and a second member. The second member is between the first member and the part when the part is in the inserted condition. The second member is carried by the sting assembly so as to retract with the sting assembly as the sting assembly is retracted from the inserted condition to the retracted condition.
