    • A method and system for enabling dynamic matching of storage utilization characteristics of a host system application with the characteristics of the available storage pools of an attached distributed storage system, in order to provide an optimal match between the application and selected storage pool. An abstraction manager is provided, enhanced with a storage device configuration utility/module, which performs a series of tasks to (1) obtain/collect the correct configuration information from each connected storage device or storage pools and/or (2) calculate the configuration information when the information is not readily available. The storage device configuration module then normalizes, collates and matches the configuration information to the various applications running on the host system and/or outputs the information to a user/administrator of the host system via a software interface. By using the collected/calculated configuration information, applications are assigned to an optimal storage pool in an intelligent and efficient manner.

    • An apparatus for improving the reliability of host data stored on Fiber Channel attached storage subsystems by performing end-to-end data integrity checks. When a read or write operation is initiated, an initial checksum for data in the read/write operation is generated and associated with the data, wherein the association exists through a plurality of layers of software and attached storage subsystems. The initial checksum is passed with the data in the read/write path. When a layer of software in the read/write path receives the initial checksum and data, the layer performs an integrity check of the data, which includes generating another checksum and comparing it to the initial checksum. If the checksums do not match, the read/write operation fails and the error is logged. If the checksums match, the integrity check is repeated through each layer in the read/write path to enable detecting data corruption at the point of source.

    • An error detection mechanism is provided for detecting sequential and distributed errors in a device I/O stream. The sensitivity of the errors is user definable. The result of the error detection is fed back into the path management software, which may use the error information to decide whether a device path should be disabled. The error detection mechanism sets a time span for a time window and counts the number of errors that occur during the time window. Each time a time window ends with at least one error, the sequential error count and the distributed error count are incremented. However, if an I/O returns without an error, the sequential error count is cleared. If the sequential error count reaches a predetermined limit, the path is disabled. After a predetermined number of time windows, if the distributed error count reaches a predetermined limit, the path is disabled.

    • A storage area network (SAN) management and configuration method and apparatus are provided via enabling in-band communications. In the storage area network (SAN) management and configuration method, a SAN management application is utilized for communicating with a device driver. A pass through is provided by the device driver to a host bus adapter (HBA) for passing communications to a device in the storage area network from the SAN management application. The storage area network (SAN) management and configuration apparatus via enabling in-band communications includes a storage area network (SAN) management application for communicating with at least one SAN-connected host system. Each SAN connected host system includes a management application agent for communicating with a host bus adapter (HBA) device driver. The HBA device driver is provided for communicating with a device in the storage area network. The HBA device driver includes at least one pass through service for passing a plurality of commands to the device in the storage area network. The management application agent provides predefined protocol functions for communicating with the device in the storage area network. The predefined protocol functions include a common transport (CT) protocol function and an extended link service (ELS) protocol function.
