    • The invention is a system and method for producing a mail piece wherein the system includes at least one printer for printing documents and envelopes in response to signals generated by a host computer under control of an application program. In addition, the system includes: a mail finishing unit which forms the mail piece from the envelopes and documents; and, a control unit which controls the finishing unit to form each individual mail piece within the set of produced mail pieces. Each individual mail piece is comprised of attributes specific to that mail piece. The control unit receives signals generated by the host computer, parses the signals received therefrom, and extracts control signals embedded therein by the host computer. The control signals identify the individual attributes associated with each individual mail piece. The control unit responds to the extracted control signals by generating finishing control signals for the finishing unit to create the individual mail piece. The control unit is further programmed to extract print signals for controlling the print unit. The system user may designate a particular format or protocol to a document page which in turn identifies the page to the control unit as a control page, containing control signals whose elements are not to be printed but which in turn will direct the system in the production of the corresponding document which is to be included within the mail piece.

    • A method for maintaining mailpiece integrity in a mailing system when a mechanical module experiences an error. For one category of errors, the mailing system may automatically recover from the error without operator intervention. For the remaining category of errors, the mailing system may recover from the error with minimum operator intervention, that is, the operator may be required to only remove the error producing mailpiece. A motion control processor for an error producing mechanical module will report a fault to its corresponding mailpiece builder task and the error detector task. Movement of at least the error producing mailpiece shall stop. The fault will be reported to the mailpiece builder tasks corresponding to the mechanical modules having no error condition. The mailing system shall suspend further processing of mailpieces upstream from the error producing mailpiece. For one category of errors, the mailing system will purge the error producing mailpiece from the error producing module without operator intervention. For the remaining category of errors, the operator will be required to remove at least the error producing mailpiece. State machines are then selected to perform system wide job recovery.

    • This invention utilizes a simple mechanical buffer that will hold material and a two stage software buffering technique that controls the mechanical buffer to act as a First In First Out mechanical mechanism that allows other system events to be triggered off of dynamic thresholds. The two stage software buffering technique consists of a simple software FIFO with rule based logic to control input into a primary queue input and a secondary reserve queue which holds information as soon as it arrives. The decision to move information from the secondary reserve queue into the primary queue is based upon specific rules that are dynamically executed. This permits the creation of a dynamic threshold and allows the reliable triggering of the systems events. The foregoing permits material that is being produced at one fixed speed to be synchronized with material that is produced at variable speeds. The foregoing also permits a first document laser printer that has a constant printing time and a second envelope printer that has a variable print time to be synchronized. Thus, the document may be printed with a laser printer and the envelope printed with an ink jet printer.

    • A method and system for reformatting an ASCII or similar text file is provided, such that the resulting output can be easily manipulated, enhanced and postal coded. Text reformatting of the present invention uses easily defined set up data tables to read the input text file and then to direct extraction of information from the input text file for storage in a set of data base tables. Included in this information may be destination addresses, which can be optionally exported to address quality software for postal coding and presorting. The address data is then re-imported and a report is created using a standard report generator. The report may then be sent to a document finishing program for processing into a mail stream.

    • A system for producing mail pieces. The system includes a plurality of apparatus each having a first printer for printing documents and a second printer for printing envelopes and a mail finishing unit for receiving the printed documents from the first printer and the envelopes printed with corresponding addresses from the second printer and inserting the documents into the envelope to form and frank a mail piece, and a plurality of user input stations. The apparatus operates under the control of a single stream of job data from a mail center controller, where the job data includes a job header defining default mail piece attributes and mail piece records which include document data and address data, and which may include specific mail piece attribute data for each corresponding mail piece. The apparatus control mechanism partitions the data stream and controls the first printer to print the documents while controlling the second printer to separately print the envelopes which are moved along a separate path to an insert station where the mail piece is formed. The system also includes data stores of postal rates and of per item weights of items of materials used to form mail pieces which are used to calculate postage values for mail pieces.
