    • There is provided a method of digital Automatic Gain Control (AGC) in a receiver having limited dynamic range, particularly for discontinuous signals. The method comprises detecting the level of a received and AGC'd discontinuous signal, comparing the level of the AGC'd signal relative to the dynamic range of the receiver, and adjusting the AGC to establish a desired relationship between the AGC'd signal and the dynamic range limitation. There is also provided a method of handoff in a TDMA cellular-type transmission system utilizing this method of AGControl.The method for Automatic Gain Control (AGC) of discontinuous signals in a receiver having limited dynamic range is further characterized by: digitizing a received and AGC'd discontinuous signal and converting the digitized samples to a power sample to sense the power of and detect the level of the signal, comparing the level of the AGC'd signal relative to the dynamic range of the receiver; and coarsely-adjusting by either progressively attenuating the signal until it falls within the dynamic range of the receiver or by progressively gain-amplifying the signal until it falls within the limited dynamic range of the receiver and finely-adjusting the AGC of the received signal until optimum use of the full (albeit limited) dynamic range of the signal processing stages is about 6-12 dB below maximum sensitivity to establish a desired relationship between the AGC'd signal and the dynamic range limitation.

    • A communications system receiver (100) is disclosed which receives a transmitted signal over a radio channel. The transmitted signal includes data and a predetermined synchronization sequence. The receiver (100) includes a demodulator (215), and a stored replica (207) of the predetermined synchronization sequence. The receiver (100) further includes apparatus (102) for computing (308) a reconstructed signal, by using the channel impulse response characteristic and the stored replica (207) of the synchronization sequence. A feature of the invention is to estimate (310) a phase offset value between an incoming signal and the reconstructed signal, for a plurality of synchronization symbols. This serves to establish (315) a relationship between the phase offset and a synchronization symbol index. The receiver then employs this relationship to derive (317) at least one "previous" phase state (214) for initializing (314) the demodulator (215).

    • An improved hands-free user-interactive control and dialing system is disclosed for use with a speech communications device. The control system (400) includes a dynamic noise suppressor (410), a speech recognizer (420) for implementing voice-control, a device controller (430) responsive to the speech recognizer for controlling operating parameters of the speech communications device (450) and for producing status information representing the operating status of the device, and a speech synthesizer (440) for providing reply information to the user as to the speech communications device operating status. In a mobile radiotelephone application, the spectral subtraction noise suppressor (414) is configured to improve the performance of the speech recognizer (424), the voice quality of the transmitted audio (417), and the audio switching operation of the vehicular speakerphone (460). The combination of noise processing, speech recognition, and speech synthesis provides a substantial improvement to prior art control systems.

    • A method and means for filtering the quantization noise from the output of a 1-bit analog-to-digital converter (noise-shaping coder) is disclosed. The A/D utilizes oversampling of the analog input signal, and decimation of the digital output signal. The multiplierless low-pass filter is comprised of a coefficient ROM for storing the filter coefficients, a counter for addressing the memory, and a true/complement gate for selectively complementing the output of the memory in response to the 1-bit data stream from the noise-shaping coder. An accumulator sums the selectively complemented output words for all samples, and the accumulated output is then applied to the decimator. A second embodiment is also disclosed which utilizes an overlapping digital filter approach, wherein a plurality of digital multiplierless filters are overlapped to provide an arbitrary length filter capable of producing an arbitrary filter response.

    • An improved noise suppression system (400) is disclosed which performs speech quality enhancement upon speech-plus-noise signal available at the input (205) to generate a clean speech signal at the output (265) by spectral gain modification. The noise suppression system of the present invention includes a background noise estimator (420) which generates and stores an estimate of the background noise power spectral density based upon pre-processed speech (215), as determined by the detected minima of the post-processed speech energy level. This post-processed speech (255) may be obtained directly from the output of the noise suppression system, or may be simulated by multiplying the pre-processed speech energy (225) by the channel gain values of the modification signal (245). This technique of implementing post-processed signal to generate the background noise estimate (325) provides a more accurate measurement of the background noise energy since it is based upon much cleaner speech signal. As a result, the present invention performs acoustic noise suppression in high ambient noise backgrounds with significantly less voice quality degradation.
